4/25 - Early Release (dismissal 1:40)

Resources this week:

Math:
This week in math, the students will be solving one- and two-step word problems using the four operations.  They will represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity.  The students will use concepts learned throughout the year to determine appropriate strategies. We will use modeling and reasoning to develop solution paths. The students will independently make sense of problems and persevere in solving them, share their solutions and critique peer strategies.  We will measure the perimeter of various circles to the nearest quarter inch and use all four operations to solve problems involving perimeter and missing measurements.  The students will construct rectangles with a given perimeter using unit squares and determine their areas.

Example problem and strategies for solving problem:

If an adult movie ticket cost $7 and a child ticket is $4, how much would it cost for Tony’s family of 2 adults and 2 children to attend the movies?

Example problem for missing measurement in perimeter problem:

Example Problem: Molly builds a rectangular playpen for her pet rabbit. The playpen has an area of 15 square yards. Estimate and label as many possibilities for the playpen.

Things to practice and review at home:
Practice identifying number patterns using multiplication, addition or subtraction strategies.
Continue practicing multiplication facts 2 to 10
Practice solving two step word problems using all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).

Upcoming events:
4/10 FSA ELA Assessment
4/11 FSA ELA Assessment
4/16 FSA Math Assessment
4/17 FSA Math Assessment

Resources for this week:
Our resources this week will vary due to FSA testing.

Math:
This week in math the students will compare and classify polygons, quadrilaterals, and draw polygons with specified attributes to solve problems.  They will decompose quadrilaterals to understand perimeter as the boundary of a shape.  The students will explore perimeter as an attribute of plane figures and solve problems.  They will measure side lengths in whole number units to determine the perimeter of polygons. The students will determine the perimeter of regular polygons and rectangles when whole number measurements are missing.

Math:
This week in math we will conclude our studies of module 6 lessons.  The students will generate measurement data and interpret measurement data from various line plots.  They will also represent measurement data with line plots.  The students will analyze measurement data to problem solve.
Example of line plot.

Week of March 26, 2018

Upcoming events:
3/30 – No School - Spring Holiday

Resources this week:
Cox:
Monday – Music
Tuesday – a.m. P.E.
Wednesday – Art

Math:
The students will continue collecting and displaying data.  They will understand that picture and bar graphs are vertical representations of tape diagrams, and apply skip counting and multiplication strategies to analyze them.  The students will solve one- and two-step problems.  They will learn that intervals do not have to be whole numbers, but can also have fractional values that facilitate recording measurement data.

Science:
This week in science, we will continue our discussions on plant parts and functions and role of parts of plants.

Week of March 12, 2018

Upcoming events:
3/14 – End of Module 5 test
3/15 – Tree Hill Field Trip
3/16 – No School (Teacher Planning Day)
3/19 – 3/23 – Spring Break
Resources this week:
Cox:
Monday - P.E.
Tuesday - Art

Math:
The students will continue comparing fractions with the same numerator using fraction strips, number lines, and symbols ( >, <, =).  They will continue developing an understanding that the numerator in a fraction does not necessarily determine the size of the fraction.  The students will explore methods for partitioning wholes into fractional units using number lines as a measurement tool.
We will begin to discuss how data is collected, categorized and analyzed.  The students will show data in tape diagrams where units are equal groups with a value greater than 1.They will explore picture and bar graphs as vertical representations of tape diagrams and apply skip-counting and multiplication strategies to analyze data.
