ELA:
Please check out Mrs. Townsend’s dojo site for reading activities and information.  Mrs. Rodgers is updating reading information and spelling words.

Math:
This week in math, the students will continue learning the conventional order for performing operations when parentheses are and are not present in an equation.  They will use the associative property as a strategy to multiply using units up to 8.  The students will relate division-using units up to 8 with multiplication.  They will understand division as both a quantity divided into equal groups and an unknown factor problem for which, given the large size of units, skip-counting to solve can be more efficient than dividing.  The students will continue using the distributive property and the fact 9=10-1 as a strategy to multiply and will identify and use math patterns to multiply.

Example of using the associative property to multiply using units of 8:
8 × 5 = (4 × 2) × 5
          = 4 × (2 × 5)
          = 4 × 10

Example of 9=10-1 strategy to solve a multiplication problem:

Things to practice and review at home:
Practice adding and subtracting numbers within 1000.
Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes.

Math:
This week in math the students will continue counting by sixes and sevens, composing up to and then over the next ten.  For example, students might count 6, 12, 18, and then mentally add 18 + 2 + 4 to make 24.  This skip-counting method utilizes make ten strategies. Students will begin to understand that multiples of 6 can be thought of as (5 + 1) x n to make 5 and 1 more groups, or 6 groups of n.   Multiples of 7 can be thought of as (5 + 2) x n to make 5 and 2 more groups, or 7 groups of n.  The students will continue using the distributive property as a strategy to multiply and divide and interpret the unknown in multiplication and division to model and solve problems using units of 6 and 7.  The students will begin to understand the function of parentheses and apply to solving mathematical problems.

This week in math, we will begin our module 3 lessons revisiting the commutative property of multiplication introduced in module 1.  The students will recognize that if they know 3x6=18, then they also know 6x3=18.  Students will apply the commutative property with the n + 1 strategy to solve unknown facts. For example, students will relate 5x8 and 8x5, and then add one more group of 8(n) to solve 6x8 and 8x6.  The students will be using a letter to represent the unknown in various positions within multiplication and division problems.
Example problem:  Twenty –four people line up to use the canoes at the park.  Three people are assigned to each canoe.   How many canoes are used?
