Math:
This week in math the students will continue to decompose to subtract three-digit measurements with a zero in the tens and ones place.  They will estimate differences by rounding and apply to solve measurement word problems.  The students will estimate sums and differences of measurements by rounding, and then solve mixed word problems.  The students will begin Module 3 focusing on multiplication and division with units of 0, 1, 6-9 and multiples of 10.

Example word problem:

Millie's fish tank holds 403 liters of water.  She empties out 185 liters to clean the tank.  How many liters of water are left in the tank?
a.  Estimate how many liters of water are left in the tank by rounding.
b.  Estimate how many liters are left by rounding in a different way.
c.  How many liters of water are actually left in the tank?
d.  Is your answer reasonable?  Which estimate was closer to the exact answer?

Things to practice at home:
Practice multiplication facts 2-10
Continue working on rounding numbers to nearest 10 and 100
Add and subtract numbers within 1000 focusing on numbers with 0 in the ones and tens place.
Solve word problems involving the four operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)
Tell and write time and practice solving elapsed time problems

Science:
This week in science the students will describe the changes water undergoes when it changes state through heating and cooling, by using familiar scientific terms such as melting, freezing, boiling, evaporation, and condensation.

Math:
This week in math the students will add measurements using the standard algorithm to compose larger units.  They will estimate sums by rounding and apply to solve measurement word problems.  The students will decompose once to subtract measurements including three-digit minuends (the quantity or number from which another is to be subtracted)with zeros in the tens or ones place.  They will decompose twice to subtract measurements including three-digit minuends with zeros in the tens and ones places.

Example of rounding numbers to add:

Example of decomposing a number to subtract:

Things to practice at home:
Continue to practice multiplication facts 2-10.
Practice telling time and solving elapsed time word problems using a number line.
Round numbers to nearest 10 and 100.
Add and subtract numbers within 1000.
Solve word problems using the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).

Science:
This week in science the students will identify properties of matter used to describe objects, such as size, shape, color, texture, and hardness.  They will begin to classify objects according to similar properties.

Week of October 14, 2019

Our Boosterthon Fun Run drive will continue this week.  Thank you to all families for your support and help in working to achieve our school goal!!
Upcoming events:
10/14 & 10/15 - District ELA Assessment
10/16 - District Math Assessment
10/16 - All Pro Dad at 7:45 a.m. Media Center
10/17 - Soaring Eagles FUNRUN 3rd grade at 9:45 - 10:45
10/18 0 No School Teacher Planning

Resources this week:
10/15 - Music/P.E.

Math:
This week in math the students will solve real world problems involving all four operations with grams, kilograms, liters, and milliliters.  They will begin to round two-digit and three-digit measurements to the nearest ten on the vertical number line.  The students will also use the vertical number line to round numbers to the nearest hundred.  They will begin to add measurements using the standard algorithm to compose larger units.

Example problem using place value knowledge and vertical number line to round numbers:

Things to practice at home:
Practice rounding numbers to nearest 10 and 100.
Add and subtract numbers within 1,000.
Continue practicing multiplication facts 2-10.
Solve word problems involving all four operations (addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication).
Practice using a number line and clock to solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals in minutes.
