Math:
This week in math the students will solve real world problems using graphs.  They will solve one-and two-step word problems analyzing data in graphs.  The students will interpret measurement data from line plots and represent measurement data with line plots.

Example word problem using a line plot to display measurement data:

Katelyn measures the height of her bean plant on Monday and again on Friday.  She says that her bean plant grew 10 quarter inches.  Her partner records 2 1/2 inches on his growth chart for the week.  Is her partner right?  Why or why not?

Yes, her partner is right.  I drew a ruler divided into quarter inches and know that 10 quarter inches is the same as 2 2/4 inches.  I drew another ruler divided into half inches and know that 2 2/4 inches is the same as 2 1/2 inches.

Things to practice at home:
Continue learning multiplication facts 2-10
Solve 2 and 3 step word problems involving the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)
Tell and write time to minute and 5 minutes and solve elapsed time word problems.
Use knowledge of place value to round numbers to nearest 10's and 100's.
Partition objects into different fractional units
Practice identifying equivalent fractions
Solve addition and subtraction problems within 1000

Math:
This week in math we will begin our module on "Collecting and Displaying Data".  The students will begin to generate and organize data focusing on graphs and line plots.  They will collect and analyze different types of data.  The students will rotate tape diagrams vertically to make connections between tape diagrams and bar graphs.  The students will create scaled bar graphs.

Example word problem using tape diagram to display data:

Things to practice at home:
Continue to practice multiplication facts 2-10
Use place value knowledge to round 2, 3, and 4 digit numbers to nearest 10's and 100's
Solve 2 step word problems using the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)
Add and subtract numbers within 1000
Find areas of rectangles and solve word problems involving area.
Tell time to nearest minute and 5 minutes and solve elapsed time word problems

Science:
This week in science we will conclude our studies on Earth and Stars.

Week of February 17, 2020

Upcoming events:
2/18 - SAC meeting 6:00 pm Media Center
2/18 - Tree Hill Field Trip Form goes home
2/19 - All Pro Dads 7:45 am Media Center
2/24 - Class Pictures
2/24 - 2/28 - Scholastic Book Fair
2/25 - End of Module 5 Test
2/27 - Book Fair Parent Night 3-6 pm

Resources this week:
2/19 - Music/P.E.

Math:
This week in math the students will conclude their module 5 studies.  The students will decompose whole number fractions greater than one using whole number equivalence with various models.  They will explain equivalence by manipulating units and reasoning about their size.  The students will compare fractions with the same numerator pictorially and by using the greater than, less than, or equal to symbols and use a model to reason about their size.

Example of comparing fractions pictorially:

Things to do at home:
Continue to review multiplication and division math facts
Practice partitioning items into equal parts
Practice drawing simple two-dimensional rectangular shapes and calculating the area using multiplication
Continue to practice telling time and solving elapsed problems ("How many minutes have passed since you started homework?")
Use knowledge of place value to round 2, 3, 4 digit numbers to nearest 10's and 100's
Solve two-step word problems using the four operations (multiplication, division, subtraction, and addition)

Science:
This week in science the students will investigate and explain the benefits of using telescopes to see stars.

Keck Telescope - Hawaii

Week of February 10, 2020

Upcoming events:
2/17 - President's Day - No School
2/18 - SAC Meeting Media Center 6 pm
2/19 - All Pro Dad's Media Center 7:45 am

Resources this week:
2/10 - P.E.
2/13 - Media/Art

Math:
This week in math the students will be able to recognize and show that equivalent fractions refer to the same point on the number line.  They will generate simple equivalent fractions by using visual models and the number line.  The students will express whole numbers as fractions and recognize equivalence with different units.  They will express whole number fractions on the number line when the unit interval is 1.

Example word problem naming whole numbers as fractions on a number line:

Things to practice at home:
Practice multiplication facts 2-10
Solve time word problems and elapsed time word problems
Use knowledge of place value to round numbers to nearest 10's and 100's
Solve 2 step word problems using the four operations (multiplication, division, subtraction, and addition).
Continue partitioning wholes into various fractional units
Add and subtract numbers within 1000
Helpful math videos:

Science:
This week in science the students will continue to learn about stars and discuss the sun as a star.  The students will identify what stars use to make energy and discuss why we are unable to see the sun at night like all other stars.

Week of February 3, 2020

Upcoming events:
2/7 - PTA Dance
Resources this week:
2/3 - Music
2/5 - Art
2/6 - Music

Math:
This week in math the students will place whole number fractions and unit fraction between whole numbers on a number line.  They will continue placing various fractions on the number line and compare fractions and whole numbers on the number line by reasoning about their distance from 0.  The students will begin to recognize that distance and position on the number line help them compare fractions and recognize and show that equivalent fractions have the same size, though not necessarily the same shape.
Example of word problem comparing fractions on the number line:

Things to practice at home:
Practice solving 2 step word problems using the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
Tell time to nearest minute and 5 minutes and solve elapsed time word problems.
Practice multiplication facts 2-12
Use place value knowledge to round number to nearest 10's and 100's.
Add and subtract numbers within 1000
Practice dividing objects into equal parts and label the parts
Use number lines to partition in various parts and label
