"PAWS on Hunger" Food Drive

This Friday... BSE Staff members will be out at the car rider line before school collecting food items for families in the Jacksonville community! Please support this cause! Duval County Public Schools’ Department of Community and Family Engagement in partnership with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Second Harvest of North Florida, Publix, Suddath and the Dalton Agency are encouraging parents to support their children in putting a “Paws on Hunger” with a food drive.

“Paws on Hunger!” Food drives help enable Second Harvest to provide food to the less fortunate families in our community who are struggling to put food on the table.  They are in need of healthy shelf-stable items that families can build well-rounded meals from.  Their suggested food drive menu items include:

  • Canned fruit: fruit cocktail, sliced peaches
  • Canned vegetables: corn, green beans
  • Canned meats: tuna, beef, all others
  • Canned beans: pork ‘n beans, black beans
  • Canned soup: chicken noodle soup, vegetable soup
  • Canned tomatoes and pasta sauce
  • Grains: pasta, rice
  • Breakfast cereals and granola bars
  • Peanut butter and jelly (non-glass containers)
  • Shelf-stable milk

Week of November 18th-22nd & November 25th & 26th

Early Release this Wednesday.  Next week we will only have school on Monday and Tuesday.  Students will not return to school until Tuesday, December 3rd.

Please sign and return permission slips for our field trip to the IMAX on December 9th.

ELA:

In our reading of Edward Tulane last week, we learned a lot about him... physical traits through detailed description and internal traits through his thoughts about himself and others. This week we will locate and cite evidence to write about this main character.

In the story, his human family will sail on the Queen Mary to London, which will offer an opportunity to learn about the ship through informational text. We will learn about the Queen Mary and discuss informational text features.

We will ask questions such as:
  • What is the purpose of the heading _____?
  • Under which heading would you MOST LIKELY find information on ____?
  • Why would this text feature be important?
  • What caption could be written to explain this photograph?

We will also touch on examples of figurative language that Kate DiCamillo uses to describe. Whenever you describe something by comparing it with something else, you are using figurative language.  Students need to understand why an author would use figurative language to describe an object or character. See below for examples of figurative language.

Simile
·         A simile uses the words “like” or “as” to compare one object or idea with another to suggest they are alike.
Example: My teacher is as busy as a bee. The girl’s eyes sparkled like stars in the sky.

Metaphor
·         The metaphor states a fact or draws a verbal picture by the use of comparison. A simile would say you are like something; a metaphor is more direct.
Example: John’s mind is a computer.
My pillow was a cloud under my head.

Personification
·         A figure of speech in which human characteristics are given to an animal or an object.
Example: The old car coughed and sputtered when my dad started it. The microwave timer told me my pizza was ready.

Math:

We will continue our discussion on fractions.  We will look at how fractions are equal parts of a set or region.  We will have a test on topic 13 lessons 1-4 on Tuesday, November 26th.  When we return from Thanksgiving break we will discuss equivalent fractions, fractions on a number line, etc.

Science:
We will focus on the vocabulary of chapter 4.  We will also read lessons 2 & 3.

Key vocabulary: Forms of energy:
Sound energy, mechanical energy, light energy, electrical energy, and heat energy

potential & kinetic energy

Veteran's Day

On Friday, we honored our Veterans with our school wide flag raising.

Friday afternoon we read our November Book of the Month, America's White Table. The White Table is set in many mess halls as a symbol for and remembrance to service members fallen, missing, or held captive in the line of duty. Solitary and solemn, it is the table where no one will ever sit. As a special gift to her Uncle John, Katie and her sisters are asked to help set the white table for dinner. As their mother explains the significance of each item placed on the table Katie comes to understand and appreciate the depth of sacrifice that her uncle, and each member of the Armed Forces and their families, may be called to give. It was just a little white table... but it felt as big as America when we helped Mama put each item on it and she told us why it was so important. "We use a Small Table, girls," she explained first, "to show one soldier's lonely battle against many. We cover it with a White Cloth to honor a soldier's pure heart when he answers his country's call to duty." "We place a Lemon Slice and Grains of Salt on a plate to show a captive soldier's bitter fate and the tears of families waiting for loved ones to return," she continued."We push an Empty Chair to the table for the missing soldiers who are not here..." Afterward students created diagrams of the white table explaining what each item represents. They also wrote letters to Veterans they know.

Here is a photo of The White Table in our school lobby.

Week of November 11th-15th

Just a reminder there is no school, Monday in observance of Veteran's Day!

Our Fun Run will take place on Thursday!  2nd and 3rd grade will run at approximately 9:55. Please continue to get those pledges in!  Thank you to all who have donated.

Upcoming Field Trip:  We will be going to the IMAX on Monday, December 9th.  You must be a registered volunteer to attend! :)

Math:
We are moving on to fractions this week!  We will begin by discussing fair shares and ordering fractions from least to greatest.

Science:
We will be taking a walk around the school to try and identify the different types of energy that is being used all throughout the building.

We will also have a Scholastic News that discusses different foods around the world.  Scholastic News magazines are great because it allows the students to identify plenty of text features.  Text features help students better understand the article or passage.

ELA:

Our new novel study will begin! I am so excited because unlike Charlotte's Web, most of us are unfamiliar with it. We will read The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane written by Kate DiCamillo.  She is also the author of The Tale of Despereaux, Because of Winn Dixie, and The Tiger Rising.

This week we will make predictions using our schema, the words in the title, and the cover. We will then read chapters 1 and 2. Character development is very important in this story. Chapter 1 introduces us to Edward, a china rabbit, and the ten-year-old girl, Abilene, who owns him before his miraculous journey begins. As we read these chapters, we will also note words beginning with the prefixes un- and in-. When these prefixes are added to a word, the meaning of the word changes to the opposite of the word.

Week of November 4th-8th

Boosterthon Fun Run starts on Monday!!!!

Announcements:
Report cards will be sent home on Monday, please sign and return.

Picture retakes will be on Tuesday!  Please let us know if your child will be participating!

First quarter awards will be on Tuesday at 1:45.

Early Release on Wednesday.

ELA:  This week, we will read Trapped By the Ice written by Michael McCurdy. This is an amazing story of bravery and determination. The genre is narrative non-fiction. It is a retelling of a true story in which a series of actual events come to life. It is the true tale of the 1915 expedition by Sir Ernest Shackleton to cross the polar ice cap which turned out to be a two-year saga of survival for Shackleton and his crew.
Our vocabulary will be the following words:
startled-surprised or shocked
lunge- to have move forward suddenly
delayed-to have waited until later to do something
perilous-very dangerous
makeshift- something used as a temporary substitute for something else (clarification-not as good as the original and not able to last like the original)

As we read this story and an additional photo essay of the expedition, we will focus on informational text features and determine their meaning and purpose. We will also work with cause and effect and discuss the theme of this heroic adventure.

Math:
We will wrap up our lessons on topic 10-- Patterns & Relationships.  We will finish up lessons, review, and test on Friday.

We will begin fractions the week of November 11th!  Please continue to get on i-Ready or Reflex math at home. :)

Science:
We will focus on the effect energy has on motion.  We will look at various objects that cause motion or create change.  For example, an electric fan, a lamp, a wind up toy, a top, a ramp with a toy, and a flashlight with batteries.
