Week of April 1, 2019

Upcoming events:
4/3 - ELA FSA Assessment
4/4 - ELA FSA Assessment

Resources this week:
4/1 - P.E.
4/4 - Media

Math:
This week in math the students will compare and classify polygons, quadrilaterals, and draw polygons with specified attributes to solve problems.  They will decompose quadrilaterals to understand perimeter as the boundary of a shape.  The students will explore perimeter as an attribute of plane figures and solve problems.  They will measure side lengths in whole number units to determine the perimeter of polygons. The students will determine the perimeter of regular polygons and rectangles when whole number measurements are missing.

Example problem for missing measurement in perimeter problem:

Things to practice and review at home:
Practice identifying number patterns using multiplication, addition or subtraction strategies.
Continue to review  multiplication and division facts 2 to 10
Use a vertical number line to round numbers to nearest 10's and 100's.
Practice solving two step word problems involving all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).
Practice identifying equivalent fractions using number lines and/or fraction strip models.

Science:
This week in science the students begin learning about plant structures.  The will identify and/or describe the parts of plants and/or the plant's role.

Week of March 25, 2019

Upcoming events:
3/25 - BSE Math Competition 6 p.m. in Cafeteria
3/27 - All Pro Dads meeting 7:45 a.m. Media Center
3/28 - End of Module 6 Assessment

Resources this week:
3/25 - Art
3/28 - Music/Art

Math:
This week in math we will be finishing up our Module 6 lessons on Analyzing and Organizing Data.  The students will represent measurement data with line plots.  They will begin Module 7 by comparing and classifying quadrilaterals and other polygons. The students will draw polygons with specified attributes to solve problems.  The students will begin to decompose quadrilaterals to understand perimeter as the boundary of a shape.

Definition of polygons and quadrilaterals:

Examples of quadrilaterals:

Things to practice at home:
Partition shapes and name the fractional parts.
Discuss equivalent fractions using models to find equivalent fractions.
Solve 2 and 3-step word problems using the 4 operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
Add and subtract 3 and 4 digit numbers.
Practice multiplication facts 2-10.

Science:
This week in science the students will complete their research on stars by completing their star posters.  They will begin to learn about plant structures and functions.

Week of March 18, 2019

Upcoming events:
3/19 - SAC meeting Media Center 6 p.m.
3/19 - Spring Photos

Resources this week:
3/19 - Music
3/21 - P.E.

Math:
This week in math the students will continue collecting and displaying data.  They will understand that picture and bar graphs are vertical representations of tape diagrams, and apply skip counting and multiplication strategies to analyze them.  The students will solve one- and two-step problems.  They will learn that intervals do not have to be whole numbers, but can also have fractional values that facilitate recording measurement data.  The students will interpret measurement data from various line plots and begin to represent measurement data with line plots.

Example of Line plot using whole numbers and fractions:

Things to practice at home:
Practice solving 2 and 3-step word problems using all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).
Discuss partitioning objects into equal parts and find equivalent fractions using number lines, fraction strips and other models.
Practice multiplication facts 2-10.
Round numbers to nearest 10's and 100's.

Science:
This week in science the students will work on their star projects gathering information on their particular star to use for their posters.

Week of March 4, 2019

Enjoy your Spring Break!!!

Upcoming events:
3/4 - End of Module 5 assessment
3/5 - Field Trip form and money due
3/6 - Early Dismissal
3/11 - 3/15 - Spring Break
3/19 - Spring Photos
Resources this week:
3/4 - Music
3/6 - P.E.(a.m.)/Art (p.m.)

Math:
This week in math, the students will begin to discuss how data is collected, categorized and analyzed.  The students will show data in tape diagrams where units are equal groups with a value greater than 1.  They will explore picture and bar graphs as vertical representations of tape diagrams and apply skip-counting and multiplication strategies to analyze data. The students will create scaled bar graphs and begin to solve one and two-step word problems involving graphs.

Things to practice at home:
Continue practicing math facts 2-10
Practice solving 2 and 3-step word problems involving the 4 operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
Partition objects at home and discuss equivalent fractions.

Science:
The students will research a star and begin to compile facts and star information.  They  will create star posters with all information collected on their specific stars.
