Week of February 25, 2019

BSE Scholastic Book Fair begins this week!!!
Upcoming events:
2/25 – Class Photos
2/25 – 3/1 – Book Fair
3/ 4 - End of Module 5 Assessment
3/6 – Early Dismissal

Resources this week:
2/26 – P.E./Media

Math:
This week in math, the students will decompose whole number fractions greater than one using whole number equivalence with various models.  They will compare fractions with the same numerator pictorially.  The students will compare fractions with the same numerator using <, >, or = and use a model to reason about their size.  They will partition various wholes precisely into parts using a number line.

Example of decomposing whole number fractions greater than one:

Example of comparing fractions with the same numerator pictorially:

Things to Practice at home:
Practice multiplication and division facts to help develop fluency.
Provide opportunities to partition objects and compare fractional parts at home.
Use addition and subtraction strategies to add and subtract 2, 3 and 4 digit numbers.
Use number lines, number bonds and fraction strips to compare fractions and find equivalent fractions.
Practice 2 and 3 step word problems using the 4 operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).

Science:
This week in science the student will continue learning about gravity and its effects on objects.

Week of February 18, 2019

Upcoming events:
2/20 – Early Dismissal
2/21 - General PTA Meeting and Program 6pm
2/25 - Class Photos
2/25 - 3/1 - Book Fair
Resources this week:
2/19 - Art
2/22 – Music/Art
Math:
This week in math the students will continue to generate simple equivalent fractions by using visual fraction models and the number line.  The students will practice expressing whole numbers as fractions and recognize equivalence with different units.  They will express whole number fractions on the number line when the unit interval is 1.
Example problem of recognizing equivalence with different units:
The zipper on Robert’s jacket is 1 foot long. It breaks on the first day of winter. He can only zip it 8/12 of the way before it gets stuck. Draw and label a number line to show how far Robert can zip his jacket.
a. Divide and label the number line in thirds. What fraction of the way can he zip his jacket in thirds?
b. What fraction of Robert’s jacket is not zipped? Write your answer in twelfths and thirds.

Things to practice and review at home:
Help your child develop an understanding of fractions as numbers by providing opportunities to discuss parts of whole at home.
Practice identifying number patterns using multiplication, addition or subtraction strategies.
Continue to review  multiplication and division facts 2 to 10
Practice solving two step word word problems involving all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).
Please review homework daily and create additional problems to review concepts and skills.

Science:
This week in Science the students will continue learning about stars.  They will identify gravity as a force that pulls objects towards each other and down towards the center of Earth.

Week of February 11, 2019

Upcoming events:
2/14 - Valentine's Day (students will exchange cards)
2/15 - No School
2/18 - No School

Resources this week:
2/12 - Music
2/14 - P.E.

Math:
This week in math, the students will practice placing various fractions on a number line. They will compare fractions and whole numbers on the number line by reasoning about their distance from 0.  The students will recognize and show that equivalent fractions refer to the same point on the number line and generate simple equivalent fractions by using fraction models and the number line.

Example of number line with endpoints of 1 and 4.  Partitioned into thirds with all fractions from 1 to 4 labeled.

Example problem of comparing fractions on a number line:
Third grade students are growing peppers.  The student with the longest pepper wins the Green Thumb award.  Jackson's pepper measured 3 inches long.  Drew's measured 10/4 inches long.  Who won the award?  Draw a number line to help prove your answer.

Example of identifying equivalent fractions of a number line:

Things to do at home:
Continue practicing multiplication and division facts.
Practice partitioning objects at home and recognizing equivalency.
Solve 3 and 4 digit addition and subtraction problems.
Review strategies used to round numbers to nearest 10's and 100's.
Practice solving 2 step word problems involving the 4 operations (addition, subtraction and division)
Helpful math videos:

Science:
This week in science the students will continue learning about stars by focusing on tools scientists used to study stars and space.  We will learn about the different telescopes used by scientists.

Week of February 4, 2019

Upcoming events:
2/5 - Mid-module assessment
2/6 - Early Release Day
2/8 - Sweetheart Family Dance 6:30 pm Cafeteria

Resources this week:
2/4 - Music
2/6 - P.E./Art

Math:
This week in math the students will begin to place unit fractions on a number line with endpoints of 0 and 1.  They will place whole number fractions and unit fractions between whole numbers on the number line.  The students will compare fractions and whole numbers on the number line by reasoning about their distance from 0.

Example problem of putting fractions on a number line:
Hannah bought 1 yard of ribbon to wrap 4 small presents. She wants to cut the ribbon into equal parts. Draw and label a number line from 0 yards to 1 yard to show where Hannah will cut the ribbon. Label all the fractions, including 0 fourths and 4 fourths. Also, label 0 yards and 1 yard.

Things to practice at home:
Continue practicing multiplication and division facts 2-10
Add and subtract 2 and 3 digit numbers.
Practice partition things at home (food, cakes, cookies,  pack of eggs, pack of crayons, pack of pencils).
Work on solving 2 step word problems involving all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
Practice rounding numbers to the nearest 10's and 100's using place value strategies.
