Week of December 16, 2019

Upcoming events:
12/16-12/19 - i-Ready Math Testing continues
12/17 - SAC meeting 6 pm Media Center
12/19 - Cox/Townsend Holiday class party
12/20 - 1/6 - Winter Break

Resources this week:
12/16 - Art
12/19 - P.E.

Math:
This week in math the students will continue finding possible whole number side lengths of rectangles using the associative property.  They will find possible side lengths of rectangles with areas of 24, 36, 48, or 72 square units.  The students will begin to solve word problems involving area and find the area of a rectilinear figure by decomposing into rectangles or completing composite figures to form rectangles.

Things to practice at home:
Solve 2 step word problems involving the four operations.
Practice multiplication facts 2-12
Use knowledge of place value to round numbers to nearest 10's and 100's.
Add and subtract numbers within 1000.
Practice composing rectangles with different areas.

Science:
This week in science the students will continue to learn about light.  They will learn how light can be reflected and refracted.  They will also learn how light can be absorbed by objects.

12/11 - P.E.
12/13 - Music

Math:
This week in math the students will continue to interpret area models to form rectangular arrays.  They will find the area of a rectangle through multiplication of side lengths.  the students will analyze different rectangles and reason about their area.  The students will apply the distributive property as a strategy to find the total area of a large rectangle by adding two products.  They will demonstrate the possible whole number side lengths of rectangles with areas of 24, 36, 48, or 72 square units using the associative property of multiplication.  The students will find areas by decomposing into rectangles or completing composite figures to form rectangles.

Example of using the distributive property to find the total area of a rectangle:

Example of area word problem with rectangle with area of 36 square units:

Things to practice at home:
Solve 2 step word problems involving the four operation (multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction.
Use place value knowledge to round numbers to nearest 10's and 100's.
Practice identifying mathematical patterns (example: 42, 46, 50, tell the next 4 numbers in the pattern).
Continue practicing multiplication facts 2-12
Practice creating rectangles with areas of 24, 36, 48, or 72 square units.  Label side lengths of the rectangles.

Science:
This week in science will continue to learn that light travels in a straight line until it strikes an object or travels from one medium to another.

Week of December 2, 2019

Upcoming events:
i-Ready Reading and Math Diagnostic window 12/2 - 12/19
12/5 - End of Module 3 Assessment

Resources this week:
12/3 - P.E.
12/6 - Media/Art

Math:
This week in math the students will understand area (the amount of space inside the boundary of a flat 2-dimensional object) as an attribute of plane figures.  They will decompose and recompose shapes to compare areas.  The students will find the area of a rectangle through multiplication of side lengths.

Things to practice at home:
Continue practicing multiplication facts 2-10
Solve one and two-step word problems involving the four operations (multiplication, division, subtraction and addition).
Tell time and practice solving elapsed time problems
Round numbers to nearest 10's and 100's
Add and subtract numbers within 1000

Science:
This week in science the students will continue identifying ways that energy has the ability to cause motion.  They will recognize that objects not in motion have stored or potential energy related to their position.  The students will explain how objects can undergo a change in motion.
