Week of December 17, 2018

Upcoming events:
12/18 - SAC meeting at 6:00 p.m. Media Center
12/20 - Class Holiday Party
12/24 - 1/4 Winter Holiday
1/7 - Teacher Planning Day
1/8 - Classes resume

Resources this week:
12/18 - P.E.
12/19 - Media

ELA:
We will be working on figurative language this week.  We will also be completing Achieve and I-ready lessons.  On Thursday students will complete an activity with a non-fiction reader.

Math:
This week in math the students will draw rows and columns to determine the area of a rectangle when given an incomplete array.  They will interpret area models to form rectangular arrays.  The students will find the area of rectangles by multiplying side lengths.  They will analyze different rectangles and reason about their areas.
Example word problem solving for area:

Lori wants to replace the square tiles on her wall.  The square tiles are sold in boxes of 8 square tiles.  Lori buys 6 boxes of tiles.  Does she have enough to replace all the tiles, including the tiles under the painting?

Things to do at home:
Practice multiplication facts 2-10.
Solve 2 step word problems using the four operations.
Add and subtract 2 and 3 digit numbers.
Practice rounding numbers to nearest 10's and 100's.

Science:
This week in science we will continue learning about energy.

Week of December 10, 2018

Upcoming events:
12/10 & 12/11 - Mid-Year Math Assessment
12/10 - End of Module 3 Study Guide goes home
12/12 - Early Dismissal at 1:45
12/12 - All Pro Dads 7:45 a.m.
12/14 - End of Module 3 Test

Resources this week:
12/10 - P.E./Art
12/13 - Art
12/14 - Music

Math:
This week in math, the students will continue to understand area as an attribute of plane figures.  They will decompose and recompose shapes to compare areas.  The students will model filling in shapes with centimeter and inch unit square as a strategy to measure area.  They will relate side lengths with the number of tiles on a side.

Things to practice at home:
Continue practicing multiplication and division facts 2-10.
Practice using the four operations to solve 2-step word problems.
Add and subtract 2 and 3 digit numbers.

Science:
This week in science, the students will continue creating their energy posters.  They will begin to discuss how energy is transferred.

Week of December 3, 2018

Upcoming events:
12/3 – PTA Spirit Night at Tijuana Flats 5-8 p.m.
12/4 & 12/5 Mid-year ELA test
12/7 – PTA Winterfest 6-9 p.m.
12/12 – Early Dismissal at 1:45 p.m.
12/11 & 12/12 Mid-year Math test

Resources this week:
12/6 - Music

Math:
This week in math the students will continue to identify patterns in multiplication and division facts using the multiplication table. They will solve two-step word problems involving all four operations and assess the reasonableness of solutions.
The students will multiply by multiples of 10 using the place value chart and use place value strategies and the associative property n × (m × 10) = (n × m) × 10 (where n and m are less than 10) to multiply by multiples of 10.
Multiply by multiples of 10 using a place value chart.

Things to practice at home:
Continue practicing multiplication and division facts.
Practice adding and subtraction 2 and 3 digit numbers
Work on rounding numbers to nearest 10's and 100's.
Practice solving 2-step word problems using the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).

Science:
This week in science the students will discussed how light is reflected, refracted and absorbed.  They will learn about how light travels and how light forms shadows.
