This year, new spelling words will come home on Friday and will be tested the following Friday. We all have busy schedules and this will provide more time for study.
The list will be posted here each week, and
students can make cards for at-home spelling sorts to be done during the
week.
NO SPELLING THE WEEK OF JANUARY 16.
NO SPELLING THE WEEK OF JANUARY 16.
1. Word sort: Lay the key word headings (The key word headings are in bold print.) across the table. Have the spelling words face down in a random stack. Choose one word at a time and place it under the correct key word.
2. Writing sort: Record the word sort by writing them into columns under the key word headings (The key word headings are in bold print.), not the spelling pattern. Place the spelling words face down and write each word into the correct column. Writing will help secure the spelling of words into memory.
3. Blind oral writing sort: Write the key word headings (The key word headings are in bold print.) across a piece of paper creating columns. Have a parent call out one word at a time and write it under the correct key word. This is a great way to study for the spelling test.
4. Speed sort: Use a timer or stopwatch to time how long it takes to sort the words into categories. Try to beat the baseline speed each time. Repeated, timed speed sorts help to internalize spelling patterns and improve automatic recognition.
5. Thursday practice test: Have a parent call out words randomly and write each word.
| LAFS.3.L.1.2.e Use conventional spelling for high-frequency and other studied words and for adding suffixes to base words (e.g., sitting, smiled, cries, happiness). LAFS.3.L.1.2.f Use spelling patterns and generalizations (e.g., word families, position-based spellings, syllable patterns, ending rules, meaningful word parts) in writing words. |
