Week of November 25, 2019

Enjoy your Thanksgiving Break!!

Upcoming events:
11/27 - 11/29 No School Thanksgiving

Resources this week:
11/25 - Music/Art

Math:
In math the students will continue to identify patterns in multiplication and division facts using the multiplication table.  They will identify patterns and explain them using properties of operations.  The students will solve two-step word problems involving all four operations and assess reasonableness of solutions.

Things to practice at home:
Solve addition and subtraction problems within 1000
Practice rounding numbers to nearest 10's and 100's
Solve word problems involving the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
Practice multiplication facts 2-10
Tell time and solve elapsed time word problems.

Science:
This week in science the students will continue learning about energy and will identify ways that energy can cause motion.

Week of November 18, 2019

Upcoming events:
11/19 - SAC meeting 5:30 pm/Parent Academy 6:00 pm
11/21 - Thanksgiving lunch for 1st, 3rd, and 5th
11/27 - 11/29 - No School Thanksgiving

Resources this week:
11/18 - Media
11/20 - P.E.

Math:
This week in math the students will interpret the unknown in multiplication and division to model and solve problems.  They will apply the distributive property and the fact 9=10-1 as a strategy to multiply.  The students will identify and use arithmetic patterns to multiply.  They will reason about and explain arithmetic patterns using units of 0 and 1 as they relate to multiplication and division.  The students will identify patterns and explain them using properties of operations.  The students will solve two step word problems involving the four operations and assess the reasonableness of solutions.

Example of pattern in multiples of 9.  Students use simplifying strategy for adding 9's.  Students will notice patterns in ones and tens place for products of 9.

Things to practice at home:
Practice multiplication facts 2-10
Solve one and two step word problems involving the four operations (multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction).
Round numbers to nearest 10's and 100's
Solve addition and subtraction problems within 1000
Practice telling time and solving elapse time problems.

Science:
This week in science the students will identify basic forms of energy and identify basic forms of energy such as light, heat, sound, electrical, and mechanical energy.  They will explain the form of energy different objects might use.

Week of November 11, 2019

Upcoming events:
11/11 - No School Veterans Day
11/12 - Jacksonville Zoo field trip
11/12 - Science Fair projects due
11/13 - Early Dismissal
11/13 - All Pro Dads at 7:45 am
11/15 - Science Night

Resources this week:
11/12 - P.E.
11/13 - Music
11/15 - Art

Math:
This week in math the students will begin to understand the function of parentheses and apply to solving problems.  They will model the associative property as a strategy to multiply.  The students will continue using the distributive property as a strategy to multiply and divide and interpret the unknown in multiplication and division to model and solve problems.

Example division problem using the distributive property and number bond to divide.

Things to practice at home:
Use the distributive property to solve multiplication and division word problems.
Practice multiplication facts 2-10
Solve word problems involving the four operation (multiplication, division, subtraction, and addition)
Practice solving numbers to nearest 10 and 100
Solve addition and subtraction problems within 100

Week of November 4, 2019

Upcoming events:
11/8 - BSE Veterans Day Program
11/11 - Veterans Day (No School)
11/12 - Science Fair projects due
11/12 - Zoo Field Trip

Resources this week:
11/6 - Art
11/7 - P.E.

Math:
This week in math the students will apply the distributive and commutative properties to relate multiplication facts 5 x n + n to 6 x n and n x 6 where n is the size of the unit.  They will multiply and divide with familiar facts using a letter to represent the unknown.  The students will count by units of 6 and 7 to multiply and divide using number bonds to decompose.  They will use the distributive property as a strategy to multiply and divide the units of 6 and 7.

Example problem using properties to relate multiplication facts 5 x n + n to 6 x n and n x 6.

Things to practice at home:
Add and subtract numbers within 1000.
Practice multiplication facts 2 to 10
Round 2, 3, and 4 digit numbers to nearest 10's and 100's.
Tell and write time and solve elapsed time word problems.
Solve word problems involving the four operations (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing).
