Week of January 27th-31st

Report cards will be sent home on Wednesday, please sign and return.  Our 2nd quarter award ceremony will take place on Thursday at 1:45 in the cafeteria.  We hope to see you there!

Math:
We will be working with a computer program this week called Gizmo (students can access this at home as well).  We will use this program to help model fractions greater than 1 and improper and mixed number fractions.

Science:
On Friday, we began our new topic on stars.  This week students will work in groups and research different stars.  They will present on Friday.

ELA:
This week, we will read the story, Cliff Hanger. We will be tested on it on Friday.
Cliff Hanger written by Jean Craighead George is realistic fiction and is a great adventure story about a young boy named Axel. Axel's dog, Grits, is stranded on a mountain ledge as a thunderstorm approaches. Under the supervision of his father, the leader of the climbing school, Axel braves the elements to rescue his pet.
As we read this story, we will focus on using details the author includes to make predictions. We will also work with cause and effect. We ask questions such as, what happens? (effect) and why does it happen? (cause)

Week of January 20th-24th

No School Monday, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day!  Wednesday is Early Release!

Curriculum Guide Assessments began last Thursday, and will continue this week.  Please be sure your child gets a good nights rest, and eats a healthy breakfast.

Science CGA took place on Thursday, January 16th
Reading CGA will take place on Tuesday, January 21st

The tests will last 60 minutes. We will practice having a short stretch break after 35 minutes to simulate FCAT testing procedures.  Please make sure your child arrives to school on time.

ELA: This week we will complete a short unit of trickster tales. A trickster tale is a type of action packed, humorous folktale. Tricksters as characters have several common traits... They are usually a clever animal or person who plays tricks on other characters in order to solve a problem... often because the trickster is greedy or boastful. We will read many trickster tales, compare them, and note common attributes and how they are different. We will have a test on Friday. Please see the vocabulary tab for our words for this week.

We will also review using context clues to determine synonyms and antonyms. Here are some examples for synonyms. Use clues in the text to determine what the color word means.

1. The indigo bird’s feathers shone deep blue in the sunlight.
2. “It was scorching,” Larry said, “and I mean really hot.”
3. She saw the child dangling the cat over the railing. “Why are you letting it hang down like that?” she asked.

3. “I’m not groggy,” Ana insisted. “I’m wide awake.”

Eddie Eagle Program

Today we sent a letter home about the Eddie Eagle Program.  This award-winning safety program was developed to teach accident prevention gun safety tips.  We are lucky enough to have this program in Duval County.  On January, 15th a school resource officer with the Duval County Public Schools' police department will visit our school.  During the assembly third grade students will be taught specific safety instructions on what to do it they ever discover a gun-- STOP; DON'T TOUCH; LEAVE THE AREA; TELL AN ADULT are the key messages in the curriculum.  If you wish for your son or daughter to NOT participate in the assembly, please return the form by January 14th.  If you wish for your child to participate in the assembly, there is no need to take any action.

If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Wells.  She can be reached at 860-5860.

Thank you!
