Week of March 26, 2018

Upcoming events:
3/30 – No School - Spring Holiday

Resources this week:
Cox:
Monday – Music
Tuesday – a.m. P.E.
Wednesday – Art

Math:
The students will continue collecting and displaying data.  They will understand that picture and bar graphs are vertical representations of tape diagrams, and apply skip counting and multiplication strategies to analyze them.  The students will solve one- and two-step problems.  They will learn that intervals do not have to be whole numbers, but can also have fractional values that facilitate recording measurement data.

Science:
This week in science, we will continue our discussions on plant parts and functions and role of parts of plants.

Week of March 12, 2018

Upcoming events:
3/14 – End of Module 5 test
3/15 – Tree Hill Field Trip
3/16 – No School (Teacher Planning Day)
3/19 – 3/23 – Spring Break
Resources this week:
Cox:
Monday - P.E.
Tuesday - Art

Math:
The students will continue comparing fractions with the same numerator using fraction strips, number lines, and symbols ( >, <, =).  They will continue developing an understanding that the numerator in a fraction does not necessarily determine the size of the fraction.  The students will explore methods for partitioning wholes into fractional units using number lines as a measurement tool.
We will begin to discuss how data is collected, categorized and analyzed.  The students will show data in tape diagrams where units are equal groups with a value greater than 1.They will explore picture and bar graphs as vertical representations of tape diagrams and apply skip-counting and multiplication strategies to analyze data.

Things to practice and review at home:
Continue to help your child develop an understanding of fractions as numbers by providing opportunities to discuss parts of whole at home.
Practice identifying number patterns
Continue practicing multiplication facts 2 to 10
Practice solving two step word problems involving all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).

Science:
This week in Science the students will begin to identify and describe the parts of plants and their roles.  They will learn how plant structures affect food production, support, water and nutrient transport and reproduction.

Week of March 5, 2018

Upcoming events:
3/6 - Science Chapter 2 open book test
3/8 - Rebounders Night
3/12 - Tree Hill Center Field Trip $ due
3/15 - Tree Hill Center Field Trip
Resources this week:
Cox:
Monday - Media/Art
Friday - Music
Math:
This week in math we will generate simple equivalent fractions by using visual fraction models and the number line.  The students will practice expressing whole numbers as fractions and recognize equivalence with different units.  They will decompose whole number fractions greater than 1 using whole number equivalence with various models. The students will compare fractions with the same numerator pictorially.

Example of using a model to decompose whole numbers into fractions.

Things to practice and review at home:
Help your child develop an understanding of fractions as numbers by providing opportunities to discuss parts of whole at home.
Practice identifying number patterns using multiplication, addition or subtraction strategies.
Continue to review multiplication and division facts 2 to 10.
Practice solving two step word word problems involving all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).
Please review homework daily and create additional problems to review concepts and skills.
