Week of January 6th-10th

Welcome back and Happy New Year!!  We hope everyone had a nice winter break.
Charlotte's Web permissions will be sent home on Monday. They are due back by Friday.  Sorry for the short turn around but we were unable to receipt money before winter break.  We will be going to Charlotte's Web on Monday, January 13th at the Florida Theater.  The cost is $10.  We can accept checks, please make them out to BSE.
Early release this Wednesday, January 8th.  We will also have PLC this day (students will be in resources in the morning--wear tennis shoes)

ELA:

There will not be a vocabulary quiz this week.

Over the next two weeks, we will be finishing The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane and will be focusing on the benchmarks that will be addressed on the upcoming CGA assessment.

One key idea we will work on is that some words have multiple meanings. Words with multiple meanings are words with more than one meaning.  Like homographs... these words have different meanings and can be used in different ways. In order to figure out which word you should use and what it means, you have to read the sentence and use the context clues around the work. For example, read the sentence below with the word, wild.

When observing birds in nature, scientists think that the white material reminds birds of cotton fluff they find in the wild.

Which sentence below uses the word wild the same way it is used in the sentence above?

a.       The wild kitten would not let us pet it.
b.      My uncle makes us laugh with his wild stories.
c.       The swimmer enjoyed playing in the wild waves.
d.      While walking in the wild, we saw the most beautiful flowers growing.***

Math:
The next 2 weeks, we will be reviewing for the upcoming 2nd quarter assessment.  We will review patterns, combinations, and fractions (modeling, equivalent, comparing & ordering).  Be on the lookout for these review papers, consider making additional review problems for your child to practice.

Science:
We will continue our work on Chapter 4.

Reading:
Nellie and Lawrence
We continue our novel study of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. We are beginning to see changes in the main character, Edward. I think we are all happy about that!!! He was not a very lovable rabbit in the beginning! In class we will begin using the term: character shift. A character shift occurs when a character has obvious internal traits which change during a story. A character shift can happen suddenly or over a longer period of time.  One event or several events during a story can affect the character, usually bringing about the change. It is important as readers to be aware of how a character changes and why he or she changes.

http://www.edwardtulane.com/Videos/tabid/56/Default.aspxClick on Kate DiCamillo's photo to watch a video about how she sees Edward and how the illustrator feels about the character.

We will also focus on using context clues to find the meanings of unfamiliar words and work with synonyms this week.

We are in the final stage of the writing process with our slice of life narratives - publishing! Everyone is excited to have a final published piece to share.

Math:
We will continue to work on fractions specifically equivalent fractions, and ordering fractions from least to greatest.  Last week, I briefly introduced the cross multiplying strategy to check to see if fractions are equivalent.  We will finish up topic 14 this week and test before the holiday break.  Topic 14 test on Tuesday, December 17th.  Remember to get on Reflex Math at home!
