Resources this Week:
5/18 - Media
5/19 - Art
5/20 - Music
5/21 - P.E.

Math:
This week in math the students will continue working with Area and Perimeter.  The will continue to construct rectangles with a given perimeter using unit squares and determine their areas.  The students will begin to solve a variety of word problems with perimeter.

Example word problem with given perimeter:

Week of May 11, 2020

Week 8 of Duval HomeRoom

Upcoming events:
5/19 - Virtual SAC meeting at 6:00 p.m.
5/25 - Memorial Day - No School
5/29 - Last Day of School
Resources this Week:
5/11 - Media
5/12 - Art
5/13 - Music
5/14 - P.E.

Math:
This week in math the students will begin to connect perimeter to area by constructing rectangles from a given number of unit squares to determine perimeters.  They will also construct rectangles with a given perimeter using unit squares and determine their areas.

Example problem showing a 2 units by 4 units rectangle.  The Area of this rectangle is 8 square units (2 x 4 = 8) and the perimeter of this rectangle is 4 + 2 + 4 + 2 =12 units

Example word problem connecting the concepts of Area and perimeter:
Marci says, "If a rectangle has a greater area than another rectangle, it must have a larger perimeter."  Do you agree or disagree?  Show an example to prove your thinking

Science:
This week in science we will conclude our Unit 8 on "Classifying Plants and Animals".  The students will work on completing our Benchmark Review questions before our Unit 8 assessment.

Week of May 4, 2020

Week 7 of Duval HomeRoom

BSE PTA asked that we post this flyer:

Upcoming events:
5/8 - Virtual Field Day 12:00 to 3:00
Please visit your P.E. TEAMS page for more information.

Resources this Week:
5/4 - Media
5/5 - Music
5/6 - Art
5/7 - P.E.

Math:
This week in math we will be learning about solving real world problems involving perimeter and missing measurements.  The students will use all four operations to solve problems involving perimeter of unknown measurements.  They will continue to practice solving for perimeter adding all of the sides of shapes to determine the outside boundary measurement.  The students will review the definition of "regular" and "irregular" polygons.

Example problem solving perimeter with unknown side length:

What is the perimeter of this figure?  Remember that perimeter is the outside boundaries of a shape.  The students must label the unknown sides as 11 cm and 3 cm.  The equation to solve this problem is 3 cm + 3 cm + 3 cm + 11 cm +11 cm= 31 cm.  The perimeter of this shape is 31 cm.

Science:
This week in Science we will learn about how we can classify things. Sorting and grouping plants or animals based on characteristics.

Week of April 27, 2020

Week 6 of Duval HomeRoom

Upcoming events:
4/29 - Early Release

Resources this week:
4/27 - Media
4/28 - Music
4/29 - Art
4/30 - P.E.

Math:
This week in math we will be reviewing polygons, quadrilaterals, angles, and perimeter.  The students will determine the perimeter of regular polygons and rectangles when whole number measurements are unknown.  They will begin to solve word problems to determine perimeter with given side lengths.

Example perimeter word problem:

Science:
This week in science we will continue learning about classifying animals.  We will begin to learn about classifying invertebrates.

Week of April 20, 2020

Week 5 of Duval HomeRoom

Resource this week:
4/20 - Media
4/21 - Music
4/22 - Art
4/23 - P.E.

Math:
This week in math we will be discussing perimeter of shapes. The students will understand that the perimeter of shapes is the distance around the outside of a figure/shape.  To find the perimeter of a figure you must add the length of all of the sides together.  The students will practice measuring side lengths in whole number units to determine the perimeter of polygons.  They will explore perimeter as an attribute of plane figures and solve problems.

The students should count the number of sides to classify the shape as an octagon (a shape with 8 sides) and add all the sides to find the perimeter of this shape.

Example perimeter word problem.  The students are able to use addition or multiplication strategies to solve this problem.

This shape is a regular polygon (square) since all sides are equal.
