Please no costumes on Thursday!  Also, please limit the amount of candy your child brings to school to only 1 piece.  (candy is not considered a snack) :)

Math:

i-Ready--  Students are still having difficultly being able to log on to i-Ready.  Please make sure you are not google searching for i-Ready, that will not be the correct link.  You can access the link on the blog to the right.

learn.i-ready.com

Students have all been able to log in here at school so I know the usernames and passwords work.  I have put an i-Ready log in label in the front of their planners.  Please have your students get on over the long weekend.

This week we will begin Topic 10 which is discussing different patterns.  Students will have to identify number patterns and figure out the rule.  We will also look at data tables and determine the patterns within the table.

For example:

11, 14, 17, 20, 23, 26 --The rule is add 3.

48, 42, 36, 30, 24 -- The rule is subtract 6

What is the rule for finding the number of leaflets?

Number of Cloverleaves
Number of leaflets
1

Rule: Multiply the number of cloverleaves by 3.

ELA:

In reading we have started incorporating the Socratic Seminar into our reading block. It is not something we do every day but once every week or so. This instructional model is really great for all students and it will help them become better thinkers, communicators, and prepare them to be successful as they become older.

What is Socratic Seminar?
The Socratic seminar is a formal discussion, based on a text, in which the leader asks open-ended questions.  Within the context of the discussion, students listen closely to the comments of others, thinking critically for themselves, and articulate their own thoughts and their responses to the thoughts of others.  They learn to work cooperatively and to question intelligently and civilly. Students all have a common text from which they cite evidence to support their answers and opinions.

What does is look like in our classroom?
Sometimes, students know the questions to be discussed before we begin and other times the questions are presented during the discussion. We bring our text and sit in a circle so we can all see each other. At this point in the year, the teacher asks an opinion based, text dependent question and gives students think time. Then, students begin the discussion. Our ground rules are as follows:

  • Speak so that all can hear you.
  • Be an active listener.
  • Only one person speaks at a time.
  • Cite evidence from the text.
  • Talk to each other, not just to the teacher (leader).
  • Ask for clarification is something is unclear.
  • Invite and encourage others to speak.
  • Welcome other ideas, opinions, and viewpoints.
  • Everyone is responsible for the success of the seminar.
Wilbur and his new friends...
We will finish our novel, Charlotte's Web this week. One day we will use the Socratic Seminar to discuss our reading. Some examples of questions to be discussed:

How does Templeton's character change at the end of the story? How do you know this?
How does the relationship between Fern and Wilbur change from the beginning of the story to the end?
What changes on the farm between the animals?

Science:
We will work on creating posters about energy, students will present with their groups.  I look forward to sharing the posters on the blog!  We will be doing lots of research this week! :)

Math:

Students will take a topic 5 & 8 test on Tuesday, please review these topics (multiplication & division as inverse operations)

We will also look at the different types of multiplication properties such as the commutative, associative, and distributive properties.

Examples of each:

Commutative: (flip flop rule) the order of factors does not change the product

3 x 2= 6
2 x 3=6

Test example:
Which statement is correct?
A. 6 x 4 = 4 + 6
B. 6 x 4 = 4 x 6
C. 6 x 4 = 3 + 2 x 4
D. 6 x 4 = 6 x 2 + 2

Associative: The grouping of factors does not change the product.

(2 x 3) x 4 = 2 x (3 x 4)

Test example:
Kevin wrote the expression below.

7 x (1 x 8) Which expression is equivalent to Kevin's expression?

A. 7 x 8
B. 7 x 9
C. 7 x (1 + 8)
D. (7+ 1) x 8

Distributive: You can use addition and multiplication to break a problem into parts.

6 x (2 + 5) = (6 x 2) + (6 x 5)

Test example:
Brittany has 7 crayons in her desk.  She also has 4 other boxes of crayons with 8 crayons in each box.  The expression below represent the total number of crayons Brittany has?

7 + (4 x 8)

Which expression also represents the total number of crayons Brittany has?

A. 7 + 12
B. (7 x 4) + (7 x 8)
C. (7 + 4) x (7 + 8)
D. (4 x 8) + 7

Science:
We will begin our new unit on the forms of energy (electrical, mechanical, sound, kinetic, and potential energy)

Home learning: Try and identify 3 objects in your home that use electrical, mechanical, or sound energy.

Week of October 14th-18th

This week we will begin CGA testing (we sent a note home about this on Thursday).  This testing will take place on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday-- each session will last 70 minutes.  Please be sure your student is well rested and eats a healthy breakfast.

Don't forget this is the week of our Book Fair!

The 1st quarter ends on Monday, October 21st!  Report cards will be sent home November 4th.

Put it on your calendar: 'Dudes Do Read' is Friday, November 1st from 9-11am.  All dads, uncles, cousins, grandpas please join us by sharing your favorite childhood book with us!  Please e-mail us if you are interested!

Math:
This week we will continue to discuss the relationship between multiplication and division.  We will look at several different word problems.  Students will have worksheets for math homework on Monday & Tuesday.  On Wednesday & Thursday students will need to get on the computer.  We have started a new program called i-Ready.  Students took a diagnostic test here at school and have been assigned activities based on their achievement.

You can access the website by going to learn.i-ready.com (link is located under math websites to the right on the blog)
Log-in information:
Username: students S# that can be found in their planner
Password: Also the students S# (the 'S' needs to be capitalized for both the username and password)

Please have students get on here on Wednesday & Thursday evening.

We will have a test on Chapter 5 & 8 next Tuesday, October 22nd.

Science:
We will wrap up all of our lessons on Matter.  We will review Wednesday and Thursday for our test on Matter on Friday.  Please study with your child at home.  Here is a picture of what we discovered about evaporation when a wet paper towel is placed in different areas of the school.  We also looked at a wet paper towel that was stored in a plastic bag in the same situations.

As we continue to read Charlotte's Web this week, we will focus on noticing the order of events in the
story. As readers we need to continually think about the events and the sequence in which they happen. Certain events cause other events to happen. Unless we understand how and why things happen in a certain order, we will not comprehend the story. Thinking about the events of a story in order will also help us to summarize.

We will also look closely at characters to see how the author develops characters. We will note specific thoughts, statements, and descriptions which show how they are feeling.

We will work in depth with 4 vocabulary words from Charlotte's Web this week. Please talk about them and use them in conversation at home!
sternly: in a way that is strict or harsh
fascinating: extremely interesting
incessant:  continuing for a long time without stopping
miraculous:  unexpected, extraordinary, and marvelous

Week of October 7th-11th

Monday, we will have a visit from Officer Friendly to discuss Stranger Danger.

Vision screening will take place this week.  Also, Wednesday, October 9th is early release.  Car riders are dismissed at 1:35, walkers and bikers are not dismissed until 1:45.

Math:
This week we will introduce the relationship between multiplication and division.

We will use this strategy if we want to determine if a word problem is multiplication or division:
Solving
Story Problems
Remember 3 questions:
1. How many groups?
2. How many in each group?
3. How many in all?

If you know the answers to 1 and 2 the operation is multiplication.

If you know the answers to 1 & 3 or 2 & 3 the operation is Division.

We will also work with combinations.
For example:  Mark wants to choose one sandwich and one drink for lunch.  There are 3 kinds of sandwiches: peanut butter, tuna, and turkey.  There are 3 kinds of drinks: grape juice, milk, and orange juice.  How many different combinations of a sandwich and a drink are there?

Students have been working on their fluency with math facts.  It would be very beneficial if they continued to practice at home.  Reflex Math is a great tool but just practicing flashcards is also worthwhile.  You can find flashcards at the dollar store, Target, or Walmart.

Science:
We will conduct an experiment on changing solids to liquids using chocolate! (yum!)  We will discuss the different states of matter: solids, liquids, and gases.  We will also ask the question: What conditions affect evaporation?  We will use wet paper towels to look at evaporation.
ELA:
This week we will look at different types of text and determine why the author wrote it. We think about questions such as...
Why would the author write this?
How do you think the author feels about...?

We will closely read text to find evidence and clues that lead us to the purpose.

INFORM: The text primarily includes phrases and sentences that are factual.
PERSUADE: The text includes phrases and sentences that are persuasive because of opinions, descriptions that attract the reader and statements that urge the reader to do something.
ENTERTAIN: The text has a plot: setting clues, characters, problem or challenge, and resolution. It is written primarily for enjoyment.

ONLINE PRACTICE:
Hoop Shoot!
We will also consider the author's perspective or viewpoint by thinking about how we think the author feel about a topic based on how and what he writes. Click here for information and practice with author's viewpoint.

In writing, we have been working on writing different types of leads to begin our slice of life narratives: a snapshot lead, a sound effect lead, and an action lead. This week we will begin writing our drafts!
