ELA:
Please check out Mrs. Townsend’s dojo site for reading activities and information.  Mrs. Rodgers is updating reading information and spelling words.

Math:
This week in math, the students will continue learning the conventional order for performing operations when parentheses are and are not present in an equation.  They will use the associative property as a strategy to multiply using units up to 8.  The students will relate division-using units up to 8 with multiplication.  They will understand division as both a quantity divided into equal groups and an unknown factor problem for which, given the large size of units, skip-counting to solve can be more efficient than dividing.  The students will continue using the distributive property and the fact 9=10-1 as a strategy to multiply and will identify and use math patterns to multiply.

Example of using the associative property to multiply using units of 8:
8 × 5 = (4 × 2) × 5
          = 4 × (2 × 5)
          = 4 × 10

Example of 9=10-1 strategy to solve a multiplication problem:

Things to practice and review at home:
Practice adding and subtracting numbers within 1000.
Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes.
Continue practicing multiplication facts 2 to 10
Continue practicing division facts
Use place value understanding and vertical number line to round numbers to nearest 10 or 100.
Please check out our DCPS site for homework help and strategies to help with solving homework problems.

Science:

This week in science the students will identify that light can come from different sources, such as the sun or an electric lamp.  They will recognize that light travels in a straight line until it strikes an object or travels from one medium to another.

Week of November 20, 2017

Upcoming events:
11/22 - 11/24 No school Thanksgiving break
11/21 Field Trip (Mrs. Townsend's class)

Resources this week:
Cox:
Tuesday - Art

ELA:
You may check out Mrs. Townsend's dojo site for reading activities and information.  Mrs. Rodgers is updating the site weekly.

Math:
This week in math the students will continue counting by sixes and sevens, composing up to and then over the next ten.  For example, students might count 6, 12, 18, and then mentally add 18 + 2 + 4 to make 24.  This skip-counting method utilizes make ten strategies. Students will begin to understand that multiples of 6 can be thought of as (5 + 1) x n to make 5 and 1 more groups, or 6 groups of n.   Multiples of 7 can be thought of as (5 + 2) x n to make 5 and 2 more groups, or 7 groups of n.  The students will continue using the distributive property as a strategy to multiply and divide and interpret the unknown in multiplication and division to model and solve problems using units of 6 and 7.  The students will begin to understand the function of parentheses and apply to solving mathematical problems.

Things to practice and review at home:
Practice adding and subtracting numbers within 1000.
Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes.
Continue practicing multiplication facts 2 to 10

Science:
We will continue identifying and explaining how people use different forms of energy.

11/15 - All Field trip forms and payment due
11/16 – Math/Science Night 6:00 – 7:30
11/17 – Catty Shack Field Trip

Resources this week:
Cox -
Monday - Art
Wednesday - (a.m.) P.E.
Thursday - Music
Friday - P.E.

Townsend -
Wednesday - Media/Music
Thursday - P.E.
Friday - Art

ELA:
Please check out Mrs. Townsend’s dojo site for reading activities and spelling words for this week.

Math:
This week in math, we will begin our module 3 lessons revisiting the commutative property of multiplication introduced in module 1.  The students will recognize that if they know 3x6=18, then they also know 6x3=18.  Students will apply the commutative property with the n + 1 strategy to solve unknown facts. For example, students will relate 5x8 and 8x5, and then add one more group of 8(n) to solve 6x8 and 8x6.  The students will be using a letter to represent the unknown in various positions within multiplication and division problems.
Example problem:  Twenty –four people line up to use the canoes at the park.  Three people are assigned to each canoe.   How many canoes are used?

Things to practice at home:
Study for end of module 2 assessment (using study guide provided last week)
Use place value understanding and vertical number line to round numbers to nearest 10 or 100.
Practice adding and subtracting numbers within 1000.
Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes.
Continue practicing multiplication facts 2 to 10
Please check out our DCPS site for homework help and strategies to help with solving homework problems.

Science:
This week in Science, we will be learning about ways that energy changes form.  The students will learn about energy causing motion and change through examining the cause and effect relationships and sequence of events.

Week of November 6, 2017

Upcoming events:
11/9 - We will have a school wide flag raising ceremony in honor of Veterans Day.  It will begin at 8:45 and all parents and community members are invited.

Resources this week:
Cox:
Wednesday - Music

Townsend:
Tuesday - Music
Wednesday - P.E.

ELA:
Please check Mrs. Townsend's dojo site for reading activities and spelling words.  Mrs. Rodgers is updating the site with current reading information.

Math:
This week in math, the students will continue decomposing to subtract three-digit measurements with a zero in the tens or ones place. They will solve measurement word problems drawing tape diagrams. The students will continue rounding to estimate the sums and differences of measurements and then solve problems determining the reasonableness of their solutions. The students will use the standard algorithm for subtraction to solve two and three digit metric measurements and intervals of minutes within 1-hour problems.

Example Problem and Answer Three Digit Measurement and Subtraction-Using Place Value Chart:
Sabrina had 726 milliliters of water when she started her hiking trip. She had 182 milliliters of water after her hiking trip. How many milliliters of water did Sabrina drink?

Solving word problems with units of measure using a tape diagram.

Things to practice at home:
Practice using analog clocks to determine elapse time of various activities.
Continue practicing multiplication facts 2 to 10
Discuss the liquid volume of milk, juice, and water containers found at home. Talk about how much certain objects weigh and differences in total weight of specific things at home.
Use addition and subtraction strategies to solve measurement word problems.
