Week of February 26, 2018

Upcoming events:
2/26 - PTA Spirit Night at Tijuana Flats
3/2 - Read Across America Day

Resources this week:
Cox:
Monday - Art
Thursday - Music

Math:
This week in math, the students will practice placing various fractions on a number line. They will compare fractions and whole numbers on the number line by reasoning about their distance from 0.  The students will recognize and show that equivalent fractions refer to the same point on the number line and generate simple equivalent fractions by using fraction models and the number line.
Example of number line with endpoints of 1 and 4. Partitioned into thirds with all fractions from 1 to 4 labeled.

Things to practice at home:
Help your child partition things at home into equal parts and compare fractional parts of a whole.
Practice identifying number patterns using multiplication, addition or subtraction strategies.
Continue to review  multiplication and division facts 2 to 10.
Practice solving two step word word problems involving all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).
Continue to practice rounding numbers to the nearest 10’s and 100’s using vertical number lines.

Science:
The students will complete work on their star posters this week.

Week of February 19, 2018

Upcoming events:
2/19 - No school President's Day
2/20 - SAC meeting
2/23 - Jump Rope for Heart

Resources this week:
Cox:
Tuesday - a.m. P.E.
Thursday - Music
Friday - P.E.

Math:
This week in math the students will compare unit fractions with different sized models representing the whole.  They will specify the corresponding whole when presented with one equal part.  The students will begin to identify a shaded fractional part in different ways depending on the designation of the whole and place unit fractions on anumber line with endpoints 0 and 1.  The students will begin to recognize and show that equivalent fractions refer to the same point on the number line.

Week of February 12, 2018

Upcoming events:
2/14 - Early Release
2/19 - President's Day - No School

Resources this week:
Cox:
Wednesday - Music
Friday - Art

Math:
This week in math the students will begin to build non-unit fractions less than one whole from unit fractions.  The students will represent parts of one whole as fractions with number bonds and build and write fractions greater than one whole using unit fractions. We will also compare unit fractions by reasoning about their size using fraction strips and different sized models representing the whole.

Things to practice and review at home:
Help your child partition things at home into equal parts
Practice identifying number patterns using multiplication, addition, and/or subtraction strategies.
Practice solving two-step word problems involving all four operations
Practice multiplication facts 2 to 10

Science:
The students will continue to research and collect information on their star to prepare for creating their star posters.

Week of February 5, 2018

Upcoming events:

Ft. Menendez Field Trip - 2/5 (remember to bring a bag lunch)
Book Fair dates: 2/5 - 2/9
Shopping hours: 8:30 a.m. - 2:45 p.m.
Family Night: 2/6 3:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

Resources this week:
Cox:
Wednesday - Music
Thursday - P.E.
Friday - Art

Math:
This week in math the students will specify and partition a whole into equal parts, identifying and counting unit fractions (a fraction where the top number or numerator is 1) by drawing models.  They will represent and identify fractional parts of different wholes.  The students will begin to build non-unit fractions (fractions with numerators other than 1) less than one whole from unit fractions.

Example of partitioning a whole into equal parts:
Marcos has a 1-liter jar of milk to share with his mother, father, and sister. Draw a picture to show how Marcos must share the milk so that everyone gets the same amount. What fraction of the milk does each person get?

Example of identifying equal parts and naming the fractional unit of shapes.
8 equal parts; eights; 5 eights are shaded

Example of partitioning a whole into equal parts and naming the unit fraction numerically:

Things to practice and review at home:
Help your child partition things at home into equal parts (cookies, cake, pizza, boiled eggs, shapes)
Practice identifying number patterns using multiplication, addition or subtraction strategies.
Continue practicing multiplication facts 2-10
Practice solving two step word problems involving all four operations

Science:
The students will be researching their star and begin to compile facts and star information.  They  will create star posters with all information collected on their specific stars.
