Math:
This week in
math the students will compare and classify polygons, quadrilaterals, and draw
polygons with specified attributes to solve problems. They will decompose quadrilaterals to
understand perimeter as the boundary of a shape. The students will explore perimeter as an
attribute of plane figures and solve problems.
They will measure side lengths in whole number units to determine the
perimeter of polygons. The students will determine the perimeter of regular
polygons and rectangles when whole number measurements are missing.
Example
problem for missing measurement in perimeter problem:
Things to practice and review at home:
Practice identifying
number patterns using multiplication, addition or subtraction strategies.
Practice
solving two step word problems involving all four operations (addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division).
Practice
identifying equivalent fractions using number lines and/or fraction strip
models.
Continue to review multiplication facts 2 to 10

Math:
This week in
math we will conclude our studies of module 6 lessons. The students will generate measurement data
and interpret measurement data from various line plots. They will also represent measurement data
with line plots. The students will
analyze measurement data to problem solve.
Example of line plot.
Example of measurement data. The students will plot data on line plot.
Things to practice and review at home:
Help your child
prepare for the FSA math test by reviewing skills and concepts learned in
class.
Practice identifying
number patterns using multiplication, addition or subtraction strategies.
Continue to review multiplication and division facts
Practice
solving two step word problems involving all four operations (addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division).
Practice fraction skills at home by partitioning objects and discussing parts of whole.

Math:
The students
will continue collecting and displaying data.
They will understand that picture and bar graphs are vertical
representations of tape diagrams, and apply skip counting and multiplication
strategies to analyze them. The students
will solve one- and two-step problems.
They will learn that intervals do not have to be whole numbers, but can
also have fractional values that facilitate recording measurement data.
Science:
This week in
science, we will continue our discussions on plant parts and functions and role
of parts of plants.

Math:
The students
will continue comparing fractions with the same numerator using fraction strips, number
lines, and symbols ( >, <, =).
They will continue developing an understanding that the numerator in a
fraction does not necessarily determine the size of the fraction. The students will explore methods for
partitioning wholes into fractional units using number lines as a measurement
tool.
We will begin
to discuss how data is collected, categorized and analyzed. The students will show data in tape diagrams where units are
equal groups with a value greater than 1.They will explore picture and bar graphs as vertical representations of
tape diagrams and apply skip-counting and multiplication strategies to analyze
data.
Things
to practice and review at home:
Continue to help your
child develop an understanding of fractions as numbers by providing
opportunities to discuss parts of whole at home.
Practice identifying
number patterns
Continue practicing multiplication facts 2 to 10
Practice
solving two step word problems involving all four operations (addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division).

This week in Science the students will begin to identify
and describe the parts of plants and their roles. They will learn how plant structures affect
food production, support, water and nutrient transport and reproduction.

This week in
math we will generate simple equivalent fractions by using visual fraction
models and the number line. The students
will practice expressing whole numbers as fractions and recognize equivalence
with different units. They will
decompose whole number fractions greater than 1 using whole number equivalence
with various models. The students will compare fractions with the same
numerator pictorially.

Math:
This week in
math, the students will practice placing various fractions on a number line.
They will compare fractions and whole numbers on the number line by reasoning
about their distance from 0. The
students will recognize and show that equivalent fractions refer to the same
point on the number line and generate simple equivalent fractions by using
fraction models and the number line.
Example of number line with endpoints
of 1 and 4. Partitioned into thirds with all fractions from 1 to 4 labeled.

number line.
