ELA: We are looking at the final page in our text, Bullfrog at Magnolia Circle this week. This page is informational text and has a glossary. We have already worked in pairs to determine the main idea of each paragraph and this week we will identify key details to support these main ideas. Students will also create vocabulary posters in cooperative groups for each of the 5 glossary words: amphibian, bayou, crustacean, tadpole, and tympanum.

Later in the week, we will have a "Science Talk". This involves students working with one question and preparing their answer with their opinions and evidence from the text. They will have learning targets that include following our conversation norms, This is an excellent exercise for team building and learning how to communicate in a group setting, much like a business meeting!

MATH:
The students will continue estimating sums and differences of measurements by rounding, and then solving mixed word problems. We will revisit the commutative property of multiplication to find known facts of 6, 7, 8, and 9. We will be applying the distributive and commutative properties to relate multiplication facts.

ELA:  Students will have their mid-unit 1 assessment early this week. The close reading assessment will include the following concepts:
  • identifying the main idea of text
  • listing key details from the text that support the main idea
  • explaining how information in the illustrations and words help to understand scientific concepts
  • determine meaning of new vocabulary
  • explaining what adaptations help bullfrogs survive
Below is a chart of all of the new vocabulary words we are working with... One of the most effective ways to learn new vocabulary is to use it frequently in conversation, so this would be a great activity to do at home!

In writing, students are collecting information from Bullfrog at Magnolia Circle and organizing it into the categories: habitat, eating habits, physical characteristics, life cycle, and behaviors. They will use the information to write informational paragraphs.

MATH:  We will be decomposing to subtract measurements including three-digit minuends with zeros in the tens or one place.  The students will be estimating sums and differences of measurements by rounding, and then solving mixed word problems.  We will be working with the standard algorithm for subtraction and using two-and three-digit metric measurements and intervals of minutes within 1 hour to subtract.

Examples of three digit metric measurement problems using standard algorithm and tape diagram:

Tara brings 2 bottles of water on her hike.  The first bottle has 471 milliliters of water, and the second bottle has 354 milliliters of water.  How many milliliters of water does Tara bring on her hike?

Jolene brings an apple and an orange with her to school.  The weight of both pieces of fruit together is 417 grams.  The apple weighs 223 grams.  What is the weight of Jolene’s orange?

ELA:
We are beginning a new module of study this week! In this module, students will use literacy skills to become experts—people who use reading, writing, listening, and speaking to build and share deep knowledge about the topic of FROGS! Our first text is Bullfrog at Magnolia Circle.
Click on the cover for a video reading of the text.

As we explore this new text and topic this week, we will read closely and focus on main idea, supporting details, and vocabulary. Not only will we look at details in the text which support the main idea, we will look at illustrations and think about key details they have that help us understand the main idea. In our vocabulary work, we will look at specific words and phrases and determine why we think the author chose them for this text. Although this text is written in a narrative format, it is filled with great information that will help students become experts on the topic of frogs.

In writing this week, we will begin with a free write on what we know about frogs. As we learn new information from our text, we will add information to our writing. Midweek, we will begin to organize our information into categories using index cards.

Home learning: Please continue to read at home daily and complete 1-2 Achieve3000 articles during the week.

MATH:
We will begin adding two and three-digit measurements including intervals of minutes within 1 hour.  The students will apply the place value concepts they practiced with rounding to model composing larger units.  They will solve measurement word problems drawing tape diagrams.  The students will round to estimate the sums of measurements and then solve problems determining the reasonableness of their solutions.  The students will use the standard algorithm for subtraction to solve two and three digit metric measurements and intervals of minutes within 1 hour problems.

Example Problem and Answer Two and Three Digit Measurement and Subtraction-Using Place Value Chart

ELA: Using an excerpt about how children access books in the country of Mongolia, we will complete our Mid-Unit 3 Assessment this week. Students will be well prepared for this as we have used similar texts in our daily lessons and have focused on similar text-dependent questions.

This a map of the countries in our book, My Librarian is a Camel.

For several days, we will be writing a paragraph about a librarian or organization from one of the texts we have read in this unit. Below are the criteria for the paragraph.

* A clear topic sentence that explains who the librarian or what the organization is.

* Important facts and details that help the reader know why your librarian/organization is special:

- in what country the librarian is located

- what the challenges are

- the steps needed to get books to children

- why the student selected that librarian or organization

* A conclusion that wraps up the paragraph

* Correct spelling, punctuation, and capitalization

At home this week, please read and log. Also, please complete at least one Achieve3000 lesson.

MATH: We will be reviewing rounding strategies and applying these strategies to our upcoming lessons.  The students will be rounding two- and three-digit measurements to the nearest ten on the vertical number line.  We will continue applying our rounding strategies to round to the nearest hundred on the vertical number line.

What is one more ten than 7 tens?

Which number is halfway between
7 tens and 8 tens?

ELA: This week, we begin reading an informational text that will wrap our study of how people all over the world access books and how they overcome many challenges to do so. Our text is:
We will look closely at several countries: Peru, Kenya, Finland, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Thailand, Zimbabwe, Canada, and Mongolia. We will work in groups and independently, to closely read and research the countries. This will prepare us for our end-of-unit assessment in which we will independently read about another country to do the following activities.

We will:
  • note words we are unfamiliar with
  • determine the "gist" of the text excerpts
  • think about the physical features that make it difficult to access books
  • find out how people overcome these difficulties
  • explore text features such as, illustrations, photographs, and maps of the countries
  • answer text-dependent questions
In writing, we have really begun to master strong and organized paragraph writing. We will be revising and editing our "hero" paragraphs. We use the following format:

Topic sentence
     Detail
          Explain the detail
     Detail
          Explain the detail
Conclusion - restate the topic and provide closure

Throughout the paragraph, we use transitional phrases (For example, One reason, For instance, etc.) to provide clarity for our readers.

MATH: This week in math we will work on decomposing a liter to reason about the size of 1 liter, 100 milliliters, 10 milliliters, and 1 milliliter.  We will estimate and measure liquid volume in liters and milliliters using vertical number line, and solve word problems involving all four operations with grams, kilograms, liters, and milliliters given in the same units.

Math Homework:
Lesson 8
Lesson 9
Lesson 10
Lesson 11
Things to practice at home:
At home practice identifying different containers and their capacities.
Practice estimating and measuring liquids using various metric units.

SCIENCE: This week in Science we will begin learning about matter.  We will identify the different properties of matter and identify ways to describe objects such as size, shape, color, texture, and hardness.

ELA: I hope everyone received the letters students brought home this week. They worked very hard looking at their progress, determining strengths and challenges, and setting goals for reading this year! I am so proud of my readers!

This week in reading, we will be integrating social studies with our study of physical environments around the world. We are working with all types of maps and have located all of the countries our books have taken us to so far this year. The climate, landforms, and water features of a place are important parts of the physical environment. Click on the map below to look at climates around the word. Choose the legend tab on the right side to understand what climate the different colors represent.

Click on the map below to see several maps of the United States with map keys.
There is a link to the right under social studies that has
many interactive geography activities too!
This will develop our schema for learning about different librarians around the world in the third unit of module 1. We will read a narrative informational text, Waiting for the Biblioburro. Click on the book cover to listen to the book!
Reading home learning: Complete RAH log - Look at maps or globes around the house or maps in books and look for a compass rose, a map key, and physical features - After reading Waiting for the Biblioburro at school, retell the story to someone at home.

In writing this week, we will combine simple sentences to create a compound or complex sentence, using conjunctions. We will also write a new paragraph about someone who we consider a hero in our lives... someone we admire and who sets a good example.
This week, we started logging our Achieve 3000 lessons. If students complete a lesson at home, they are encourage to jot down the title and their "first try" score in their planner or a sticky note so they can transfer the information to their log.

MATH: This week in math we will solve word problems involving time intervals within 1 hour by adding and subtracting on the number line.  The students will measure weight and liquid volume in metric units.  We will build and decompose a kilogram to reason about the size and weight of 1 kilogram, 100 grams, 10 grams, and 1 gram.  We will work on developing estimation strategies by reasoning about the weight in kilograms of a series of familiar objects to establish mental benchmark measures. We will be solving one-step word problems involving metric weights within 100 and estimate to reason about solutions and decompose a liter to reason about the size of 1 liter, 100 milliliters, 10 milliliters, and 1 milliliter.

Math Homework:

Module 2 Lesson 5
Module 2 Lesson 6
Module 2 Lesson 7
Module 2 Lesson 8

Things to do at home:
·        Use a clock to tell time and to solve elapse time problems
·        Practice decomposing or taking apart  a number for example; 333 = 300 + 30 +3
·        Talk about the different units of measure and practice solving problems using different units of measure
·        Continue practicing multiplication facts 2-5

SCIENCE:  This week in Science we will discuss/learn how scientist use their observations to infer and make explanations.  The students will recognize that observations and measurements are forms of evidence used by scientists to make inferences and draw conclusions.   We will begin to review for our Chapter 1 test on Friday.

Week of October 5

Parents... Please note that our grading system on FOCUS is having issues. Due to changes being made in the program, some grades have been removed and weighting has been changed. Mrs. Cox and I are in the process of putting the grades back in. Thank you for your patience with this.

This week is Jax Goes to College week!!  We would like Bartram to participate by having students interview a family member about their Career. Our school counselors will be sending home a "parent  interview" sheet on Monday and they would like students to return it by Friday. This can be logged on the RAH log for reading one night this week!

ELA: Early in the week, your child will bring home something special to share with you. Students have worked very hard on this project and I am so proud of their hard work on this mid-unit assessment!
This week we will be working toward reading with fluency when we read aloud. Reading with fluency is directly related to understanding what we read. The four components of reading with fluency are: phrasing   rate   punctuation   expression

Throughout the week, we will work with excerpts from books we have read in class and poetry to focus on reading with fluency. We will read texts numerous times to build fluency and then read aloud to a partner. Partners will give feedback to each other based on the areas above. On Wednesday, students will read text they have rehearsed for an assessment of fluency.

Things to do at home:
  • Choose a paragraph that has some characters talking from your chapter book. Think about phrasing, rate, punctuation, and expression and practice reading the paragraph with fluency. Perform your paragraph for someone at home or have a parent record you on their smart phone so you can hear yourself afterward. Reflect on your fluency.
  • Record your reading and any Achieve3000 lessons on your RAH log.

Math: This week in math we will continue solving two-step word problems involving all four operations, and determining the reasonableness of our answers.  The students will complete the Module 1 End of Module assessment on Tuesday.  Please review our “Study Guide” with your child to help prepare him/her for the assessment.  We will begin to explore time as a continuous measurement and relate skip-counting by fives on the clock and telling time to a continuous measurement model, the number line.  We will be counting by fives and ones on the number line as a strategy to tell time to the nearest minute on the clock.

Math Homework:
Study for End of Module Assessment (use study guide sent home on Friday)
