ELA:
Please check out Mrs. Townsend’s dojo site for reading activities and spelling words for this week.

Math:
This week in math, we will begin our module 3 lessons revisiting the commutative property of multiplication introduced in module 1.  The students will recognize that if they know 3x6=18, then they also know 6x3=18.  Students will apply the commutative property with the n + 1 strategy to solve unknown facts. For example, students will relate 5x8 and 8x5, and then add one more group of 8(n) to solve 6x8 and 8x6.  The students will be using a letter to represent the unknown in various positions within multiplication and division problems.
Example problem:  Twenty –four people line up to use the canoes at the park.  Three people are assigned to each canoe.   How many canoes are used?

Things to practice at home:
Study for end of module 2 assessment (using study guide provided last week)
Use place value understanding and vertical number line to round numbers to nearest 10 or 100.
Practice adding and subtracting numbers within 1000.
Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes.
Continue practicing multiplication facts 2 to 10
Please check out our DCPS site for homework help and strategies to help with solving homework problems.

Science:
This week in Science, we will be learning about ways that energy changes form.  The students will learn about energy causing motion and change through examining the cause and effect relationships and sequence of events.

ELA:  You will find reading activities and information on Mrs. Townsend's dojo site.  Mrs. Rodgers has updated spelling words and reading information.

Math:
We will be rounding two-and three digit numbers to the nearest tens on the vertical number line.  The students will apply rounding strategies to round to the nearest hundred on the vertical number line. We will use the standard algorithm to compose larger units once and twice.  The students will decompose once to subtract measurements including three-digit minuends with zeros in the tens or ones place.

Examples of rounding three-digit measurements:
Rounding 387 milliliters to the nearest hundred:     Rounding 117 milliliters to nearest ten:

Rounding 1,387 milliliters to the nearest hundred:
Example problem subtracting using a tape diagram and standard algorithm:
Nooran buys 507 grams of grapes at the market Tuesday. On Thursday, he buys 345 grams of grapes.  How many more grams of grapes did Nooran buy on Tuesday than on Thursday?

Things to practice at home:
Practice using analog clocks to determine elapsed time of various activities and to practice telling time.
Continue practicing multiplication facts 2 to 10
Discuss the liquid volume of milk, juice, and water containers found at home.
Talk about how much certain objects weigh and differences in total weight of specific things at home.
Practice using rounding strategies to round numbers at home on a vertical number line.  For example the number 57 is between 5 tens (50) and 6 tens (60).  The number 57 is rounded to 60.  Use the rounded number to estimate the weight.  The number 157 is between 100 and 200 and would round to 200 when rounded to nearest hundred.

Math:
This week in math, we will continue solving two-step word problems involving all four operations, and determining the reasonableness of our answers.  We will begin to explore time as a continuous measurement and relate skip counting by fives on the clock and telling time to a continuous measurement model, the number line.  We will be counting by fives and ones on the number line as a strategy to tell time to the nearest minute on the clock. The students will begin solving word problems involving time intervals within 1 hour by counting backward and forward using the number line and clock.

Example of two-step word problem:
There are 4 boxes with 6 binders in each one. Three brothers share the binders. How many binders does each brother get?

Example of time problem: (students may use a number line, tape diagram, clock, or skip counting strategy to solve this problem)

Christine has 12 math problems for homework. It takes her 5 minutes to complete each problem. How many minutes does it take Christine to finish all 12 problems?

Things to do at home:
Practice telling time using an analog and digital clock
Use clock to practice skip counting by fives, counting backwards and forwards
