Example problem showing a 2 units by 4 units rectangle.  The Area of this rectangle is 8 square units (2 x 4 = 8) and the perimeter of this rectangle is 4 + 2 + 4 + 2 =12 units

Example word problem connecting the concepts of Area and perimeter:
Marci says, "If a rectangle has a greater area than another rectangle, it must have a larger perimeter."  Do you agree or disagree?  Show an example to prove your thinking

Science:
This week in science we will conclude our Unit 8 on "Classifying Plants and Animals".  The students will work on completing our Benchmark Review questions before our Unit 8 assessment.

Week of May 4, 2020

Week 7 of Duval HomeRoom

BSE PTA asked that we post this flyer:

Upcoming events:
5/8 - Virtual Field Day 12:00 to 3:00
Please visit your P.E. TEAMS page for more information.

Resources this Week:
5/4 - Media
5/5 - Music
5/6 - Art
5/7 - P.E.

Math:
This week in math we will be learning about solving real world problems involving perimeter and missing measurements.  The students will use all four operations to solve problems involving perimeter of unknown measurements.  They will continue to practice solving for perimeter adding all of the sides of shapes to determine the outside boundary measurement.  The students will review the definition of "regular" and "irregular" polygons.

Example problem solving perimeter with unknown side length:

What is the perimeter of this figure?  Remember that perimeter is the outside boundaries of a shape.  The students must label the unknown sides as 11 cm and 3 cm.  The equation to solve this problem is 3 cm + 3 cm + 3 cm + 11 cm +11 cm= 31 cm.  The perimeter of this shape is 31 cm.

Science:
This week in Science we will learn about how we can classify things. Sorting and grouping plants or animals based on characteristics.

Week 5 of Duval HomeRoom

Resource this week:
4/20 - Media
4/21 - Music
4/22 - Art
4/23 - P.E.

Math:
This week in math we will be discussing perimeter of shapes. The students will understand that the perimeter of shapes is the distance around the outside of a figure/shape.  To find the perimeter of a figure you must add the length of all of the sides together.  The students will practice measuring side lengths in whole number units to determine the perimeter of polygons.  They will explore perimeter as an attribute of plane figures and solve problems.

The students should count the number of sides to classify the shape as an octagon (a shape with 8 sides) and add all the sides to find the perimeter of this shape.

Example perimeter word problem.  The students are able to use addition or multiplication strategies to solve this problem.

This shape is a regular polygon (square) since all sides are equal.

Science:
This week in science we will continue learning about Classifying Plants and Animals.  The students will learn how to classify vertebrates.

Week of April 13, 2020

Week 4 of Duval HomeRoom

Resources this week:
4/13 - Media
4/14 - Music
4/15 - Art
4/16 - P.E.

Math:
This week in math we will begin a new task "Problem of the Day".  Our problem of the day will be a way to review concepts learned by practicing using our RDW (Read, Draw, Write) strategy to solve word problems.  The students will log in and check in for attendance and download their problem of the day.  The expectation is to have the problem completed by 10:00 a.m. We will video chat to review strategies and solutions used to solve the problem.  This is a good way to review mathematical concepts learned. This week we will continue learning about polygons and quadrilaterals.  The students will identify attributes of polygons and name shapes.  We will analyze shapes by looking at angles, equal sides, and/or parallel sides or lines.  The students will learn about regular and irregular polygons.  A polygon with all equal sides and equal angles is a regular polygon.  A polygon with unequal sides and angles is called an irregular polygon.
Example chart of regular and irregular polygons:

Science:
This week in science we will begin Unit 8 "Classifying Plants and Animals".  The unit focuses on the big idea of diversity and evolution of living organisms.  This week the students will use the HMH Florida Science site to read lesson 1 "How Can We Classify Plants?  During the reading the students should take notes to help with the lesson 1 quiz.  Since you cannot write on the pages of our ebook you may want to write your answers on a piece of paper.  You do not need to turn in your "Sum It Up or "Brain Check" answers.

Katelyn measures the height of her bean plant on Monday and again on Friday.  She says that her bean plant grew 10 quarter inches.  Her partner records 2 1/2 inches on his growth chart for the week.  Is her partner right?  Why or why not?

Yes, her partner is right.  I drew a ruler divided into quarter inches and know that 10 quarter inches is the same as 2 2/4 inches.  I drew another ruler divided into half inches and know that 2 2/4 inches is the same as 2 1/2 inches.

Things to practice at home:
