Week 5 of Duval HomeRoom
Math:
This week in math we will be discussing perimeter of shapes. The students will understand that the perimeter of shapes is the distance around the outside of a figure/shape. To find the perimeter of a figure you must add the length of all of the sides together. The students will practice measuring side lengths in whole number units to determine the perimeter of polygons. They will explore perimeter as an attribute of plane figures and solve problems.
Example perimeter word problem. The students are able to use addition or multiplication strategies to solve this problem.

| The students should count the number of sides to classify the shape as an octagon (a shape with 8 sides) and add all the sides to find the perimeter of this shape. |
Example perimeter word problem. The students are able to use addition or multiplication strategies to solve this problem.
| This shape is a regular polygon (square) since all sides are equal. |
Science:
This week in science we will continue learning about Classifying Plants and Animals. The students will learn how to classify vertebrates.
