Week of August 26th-30th

We have had a great and busy first week! Mrs. Kluge and I enjoyed getting to know each of your children with the 'What's in the sack?' activity!

Math:

This week, we are focusing on place value to the hundred thousands place. We are working on showing different ways to represent numbers:

Standard form: 1,123
Expanded form: 1,000 + 100 + 20 + 3
Word form: one thousand, one hundred, twenty-three
Place Value Symbols:

There will be nightly homework for math this week!

Science:

This week, we will be discussing the types of tools scientists use when making observations and conducting experiments.

Reading:
We will take the IOWA reading and vocabulary assessments on Tuesday. Our instructional focus this week will be on thinking about our schema or background knowledge / prior knowledge. As readers, schema increases our self-confidence, enables us to remember new information, and connect to what we already know. We will listen to and read the lyrics to the song, Rachel Delevoryas. We will use our schema to make connections.

Writing:
This week, we will read examples of personal narratives from authors and notice how they share special memories in their stories. We will brainstorm lists of important people and events in our lives that we can write about. We will also discuss what will take place during writing conferences with me throughout the year.

Reading Information!

METACOGNITION

During our first week we learned about metacognition... thinking about our thinking. We all think when we read, but our lessons have helped us recognize we are doing this.
To help us see and understand that reading is much more than just reading words, we made this Venn diagram. Real reading only takes place when thinking is added to reading the text!
This is our chart that gives thinking stems to help us communicate what is going on in our minds as we read.

We used this "thought" bubble to help us see our thinking. While one person read the words, the other person thought aloud.

CHOOSING A "GOOD FIT" BOOK
We have talked about how we choose books that are a good fit for us. I do not lock a student into a specific level of books. As long as they follow the following guidelines, everything should be okay!

Code of Conduct

This year in order to save on paper, the Code of Conduct can be found online at the website below. Please look over the Code of Conduct at home with your student.  We will also go over it in class.  We will send home a sheet next week for you to sign stating that you reviewed this codes with your child.
