Week of August 13, 2018

Upcoming Events:
8/15 & 8/15 - ELA District Baseline Testing
8/17 & 8/20 - Math District Baseline Testing

Resources this week:
Cox:
Friday - Music

Math:
This week in math we will begin with Module 1 lesson 1.  This module builds on students' fluency with addition and their knowledge of arrays.  Students will use repeated addition to find the total from a number of equal groups.  They will begin to understand that skip counting rows is a strategy for multiplication.

Things to practice at home:
Create arrays (arrangement of objects in rows and columns) to skip count.
Create equal groups (in multiplication, one factor is the number of objects in a group and the other is a multiplier that indicates the number of groups)

Week of April 30, 2018

Upcoming events:

4/30 i-Ready ELA assessment
5/1 i-Ready ELA assessment
5/9 i-Ready Math assessment
5/10 i-Ready Math assessment

Resources for this week:
Resources this week will vary due to testing.

Math:
This week in math the students will continue to construct rectangles with a given perimeter and will determine their area.   They will use a line plot to record the number of rectangles they make and will solve a variety of word problems with perimeter.  The students will also create a robot with specified perimeter measurements , and reason about the different areas that may be produced.

Example word problem for robot activity:

Example robot:

Things to practice and review at home:
Practice identifying number patterns using multiplication, addition or subtraction strategies.
Practice solving two step word problems involving all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).
Practice identifying equivalent fractions using number lines and/or fraction strip models.
Continue to practice multiplication facts 2-10

Week of April 23, 2018

Upcoming events:
4/23 - Florida Theater Field Trip
4/25 - Early Release (dismissal 1:40)

Resources this week:
Resources this week will vary due to testing.

Math:
This week in math, the students will be solving one- and two-step word problems using the four operations.  They will represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity.  The students will use concepts learned throughout the year to determine appropriate strategies. We will use modeling and reasoning to develop solution paths. The students will independently make sense of problems and persevere in solving them, share their solutions and critique peer strategies.  We will measure the perimeter of various circles to the nearest quarter inch and use all four operations to solve problems involving perimeter and missing measurements.  The students will construct rectangles with a given perimeter using unit squares and determine their areas.

Example problem and strategies for solving problem:

If an adult movie ticket cost $7 and a child ticket is $4, how much would it cost for Tony’s family of 2 adults and 2 children to attend the movies?

Example problem for missing measurement in perimeter problem:

Example Problem: Molly builds a rectangular playpen for her pet rabbit. The playpen has an area of 15 square yards. Estimate and label as many possibilities for the playpen.

Things to practice and review at home:
Practice identifying number patterns using multiplication, addition or subtraction strategies.
Continue practicing multiplication facts 2 to 10
Practice solving two step word problems using all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).

Science:
We will be describing structures in plants and their roles in food production, support, water and nutrient transport, and reproduction.  The students will learn how plants respond to heat, light and gravity.

Week of April 16, 2018

Our MATH FSA assessments will take place this Monday and Tuesday! We are looking forward to watching all of our students show what they know! The tests are computer based and will be 80 minutes each day.

Week of April 9, 2018

Upcoming events:
4/10 FSA ELA Assessment
4/11 FSA ELA Assessment
4/16 FSA Math Assessment
4/17 FSA Math Assessment

Resources for this week:
Our resources this week will vary due to FSA testing.

Math:
This week in math the students will compare and classify polygons, quadrilaterals, and draw polygons with specified attributes to solve problems.  They will decompose quadrilaterals to understand perimeter as the boundary of a shape.  The students will explore perimeter as an attribute of plane figures and solve problems.  They will measure side lengths in whole number units to determine the perimeter of polygons. The students will determine the perimeter of regular polygons and rectangles when whole number measurements are missing.
