Don't forget this is the week of our Book Fair!

The 1st quarter ends on Monday, October 21st!  Report cards will be sent home November 4th.

Put it on your calendar: 'Dudes Do Read' is Friday, November 1st from 9-11am.  All dads, uncles, cousins, grandpas please join us by sharing your favorite childhood book with us!  Please e-mail us if you are interested!

Math:
This week we will continue to discuss the relationship between multiplication and division.  We will look at several different word problems.  Students will have worksheets for math homework on Monday & Tuesday.  On Wednesday & Thursday students will need to get on the computer.  We have started a new program called i-Ready.  Students took a diagnostic test here at school and have been assigned activities based on their achievement.

You can access the website by going to learn.i-ready.com (link is located under math websites to the right on the blog)
Log-in information:
Username: students S# that can be found in their planner
Password: Also the students S# (the 'S' needs to be capitalized for both the username and password)

Please have students get on here on Wednesday & Thursday evening.

We will have a test on Chapter 5 & 8 next Tuesday, October 22nd.

Science:
We will wrap up all of our lessons on Matter.  We will review Wednesday and Thursday for our test on Matter on Friday.  Please study with your child at home.  Here is a picture of what we discovered about evaporation when a wet paper towel is placed in different areas of the school.  We also looked at a wet paper towel that was stored in a plastic bag in the same situations.

As we continue to read Charlotte's Web this week, we will focus on noticing the order of events in the
story. As readers we need to continually think about the events and the sequence in which they happen. Certain events cause other events to happen. Unless we understand how and why things happen in a certain order, we will not comprehend the story. Thinking about the events of a story in order will also help us to summarize.

We will also look closely at characters to see how the author develops characters. We will note specific thoughts, statements, and descriptions which show how they are feeling.

We will work in depth with 4 vocabulary words from Charlotte's Web this week. Please talk about them and use them in conversation at home!
sternly: in a way that is strict or harsh
fascinating: extremely interesting
incessant:  continuing for a long time without stopping
miraculous:  unexpected, extraordinary, and marvelous

Week of October 7th-11th

Monday, we will have a visit from Officer Friendly to discuss Stranger Danger.

Vision screening will take place this week.  Also, Wednesday, October 9th is early release.  Car riders are dismissed at 1:35, walkers and bikers are not dismissed until 1:45.

Math:
This week we will introduce the relationship between multiplication and division.

We will use this strategy if we want to determine if a word problem is multiplication or division:
Solving
Story Problems
Remember 3 questions:
1. How many groups?
2. How many in each group?
3. How many in all?

If you know the answers to 1 and 2 the operation is multiplication.

If you know the answers to 1 & 3 or 2 & 3 the operation is Division.

We will also work with combinations.
For example:  Mark wants to choose one sandwich and one drink for lunch.  There are 3 kinds of sandwiches: peanut butter, tuna, and turkey.  There are 3 kinds of drinks: grape juice, milk, and orange juice.  How many different combinations of a sandwich and a drink are there?

Students have been working on their fluency with math facts.  It would be very beneficial if they continued to practice at home.  Reflex Math is a great tool but just practicing flashcards is also worthwhile.  You can find flashcards at the dollar store, Target, or Walmart.

Science:
We will conduct an experiment on changing solids to liquids using chocolate! (yum!)  We will discuss the different states of matter: solids, liquids, and gases.  We will also ask the question: What conditions affect evaporation?  We will use wet paper towels to look at evaporation.
ELA:
This week we will look at different types of text and determine why the author wrote it. We think about questions such as...
Why would the author write this?
How do you think the author feels about...?

We will closely read text to find evidence and clues that lead us to the purpose.

INFORM: The text primarily includes phrases and sentences that are factual.
PERSUADE: The text includes phrases and sentences that are persuasive because of opinions, descriptions that attract the reader and statements that urge the reader to do something.
ENTERTAIN: The text has a plot: setting clues, characters, problem or challenge, and resolution. It is written primarily for enjoyment.

ONLINE PRACTICE:
Hoop Shoot!
We will also consider the author's perspective or viewpoint by thinking about how we think the author feel about a topic based on how and what he writes. Click here for information and practice with author's viewpoint.

In writing, we have been working on writing different types of leads to begin our slice of life narratives: a snapshot lead, a sound effect lead, and an action lead. This week we will begin writing our drafts!
